If you want another great Aretha Franklin performance, there's the time that Luciano Pavarotti got sick at the Grammys, and Aretha pinch-hit for him, and sang "Nessun Dorma" in his place. It's legendary.

Amazingly, Aretha was 73 when this was filmed (Dec. 2015), already battling cancer, and near the end of her career. She died in Aug. 2018. I am so grateful we have this powerhouse performance from her later years. And equally grateful she did it in honor of Carole.

Carole King wrote Natural Woman! When you have Aretha Franklin singing this song back to Carole in tribute, it makes you have goosebumps! The shocked look on Carole King's face is because Aretha hadn't sat a the piano for years due to the fact that she wasn't in the best of health. But for Carole, she gathered up the strength to do it. This performance by Aretha made the President cry!

Carole was the words, and Aretha was the voice, and together they are the essence of everything music is. Obama was weeping as much as I was.

For those of us who grew up with these two… this was simply an amazing performance to watch. Aretha was in her 70s here, battling cancer. She (as she always did) put it ALL out there!! I can’t watch this w/o a tear… thank-you for your reaction. BTW - this was almost 50 yrs since she recorded it.. and she was hitting all the same notes!

Aretha was 73 here. She passed in 2018 at the age of 76. A national treasure and icon

I cry with emotion and awe at Aretha Franklin’s legendary performance of this song. Carol King and the audience reaction says it all.

To see Carols reaction a truly legendary singer songwriter understand she gave her song to Aretha who took it to another level and loved her for it is truly remarkable.
