It's confirmed that Shaggy's is set for life. And he is just bored staying at home, so he works or travels.

An other idea, we are seeing how we think a dog sees the human world. Scooby is not talking, but he thinks he is. When all he is doing is barking. This also explains all the other talking animals talking better than Scooby. Scooby thinks that's how he sounds. <br>Following this idea the others fit in like Shaggy, a food provider and master.

Fred, Shaggy, and Scooby are Vietnam Veterans. Fred helped develop and disassembled traps. Shaggy and Scooby were Tunnel Rats that is why they are always nervous. The girls are VA nurses helping the boys deal. Scrappy was a VC agent.

I read a fan story. Velma is a Time Lord, the Mystery Machine is her Tardis. Fred is a good, old fashioned teen. Daphne is plant person who's space ship sort of crashed on Earth. She wasn't anyone important on the ship, just lowly member of the crew that made it to a life pod. I really can't remember what Shaggy was and Scooby Doo was a member of a ship with intelligent dog aliens. Huckleberry Hound, Astro (descended from a Great Dane like Scooby,) Clifford, Deputy Dawg, Droopy, Mr. Peabody and I'm sure you could come up with other dogs. Their ship landed on Earth.and Velma rescued Scooby before bad people could do things to him.

The economic collapse theory doesn’t quite add up. More likely, there was a collapse and the economy has mostly recovered. The tech level is really high. They even have robots that can walk, run, operate rides, cook food, and scratch a dog behind the ears.

Maybe genetic engineering is very common in the Scooby Doo universe..Talking dogs are common, maybe originally for service or police/ military dogs. That's why no one seems to notice a talking dog.<br> Maybe Shaggy and Velma are genetically engineered as well...Shaggy for running speed, Velma for intelligence, but both had defects.. Shaggy's cowardice, and Velma's nearsightedness...they didn't meet design specifications, and were just dropped on the street.<br> Fred and Daphne are members of the ruling class....in a economic collapse situation, who's buying the gas and paying for the maintenance of the Mystery Machine? Fred and Daphne are funding everything. A techno feudalistic world?

The Scooby Doo as a government experiment theory and the Velma lab theory are actually both used in the DC Comics Graphic Novel story<br>'Scooby Doo Apocalypse' that came out several years ago in which it's mentioned that Shaggy also worked in a lab and had a hand in rescuing Scooby from the lab in which he created Scooby as a biological weapon, and also in this story it's mentioned that everyone's most favoritly hated character Scrappy Doo was also created as a weapon in a lab.<br>It's n interesting read and it also references some of the wildest Scooby theories out there and this graphic novel was also created with Warner Bros blessing.

1. I'd say the "Mary Jane" line in the live movie made Shaggy's drug use there pretty official. <br><br>2. The "depression theory is also borne out by the level of skills and tech available to the villains. This is a world where a person who can build a fully autonomous robot (twice) is running a broken down amusement park. And were apparently broke villains have all the access to professional grade costumes, holographic projectors, and other specialist equipment they need. <br><br>3. The "scientist theory" is stronger than the "Velma lab" theory if only because Scooby has a whole talking family, some of whom have permanent addresses (like Mama and Daddy Doo) or public careers ( Scooby Dee is a professional show dog, Dooby is a lounge singer, Yabba owns a ranch. All would be easy for the government to find. <br><br>The scientist probably brought Scooby's grandparents (he's a dog, so three full grown generations since WWII is quite possible.)
