You need to react to his live performance of „Der Weg“ of the same concert. Totally different vibe, but it illustrates his lyric and songwriting mastery!

It's the same arena Taylor played at in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The song is an anthem to his hometown Bochum, but also to the whole region "Ruhrgebiet". Gelsenkirchen is part of that region. Bochum is like 15 km away. Coke "Koks" in German is used in two different ways. Coal brickets are called "Koks" as well as Cocaine. The "Ruhrgebiet" was a, or better THE coal region.

The song in the beginning (until 2:30) is the "Steigerlied", a folk song from german coal miners. Everybody in the region around Gelsenkirchen knows that song, as there have been large coal mines for centuries.

This song is from the mid 80s and is a declaration of love to this city in West Germany. It has become te anthem of the local football club VfL Bochum, and it still is today 😊

Watch Herbert Grönemeyers „Mensch“ from the same concert! The audience will amaze you even more. And choose the longest video on YouTube. Watching it you’ll understand why…

This song is somehow the hymn of the "Ruhrgebiet". Bochum is a city in the Ruhrgebiet, a coal miners city with hard working, warm hearted people. This concert was in Gelsenkirchen, another city in Ruhrgebiet, very close to Bochum.
That's why this video opens with the miners song. Everbody knows it, everbody sings it.

Bochum is Grönemeyers hometown. So this really must be a very heartfelt song for a town that you love although it might not be the prettiest. And that feeling can be understood by anyone who hails from one of those former centres of coal-mining. So yes, this concert seemed like a sort of communion between singer and audience. BTW the 'coke' referred to a refined form of coal, and perhaps was a bit tongue-in-cheek because Bochum is commonly more known for its beer and footie than for up-market drugs.

Also, Grönemeyer played in the movie "Das Boot" from the Eighties; and he was bloody good in it.

Best thing: No phones out for recording. Just people enjoying their time and having fun.

The word "Koks" is ambiguous. In the Ruhr region, it primarily refers to the fact that, from around 1850 onward, it became possible to clean and process the coal mined there to such an extent that the necessary temperatures for smelting iron in steelworks were achieved. Since then, almost every steelworks had its own coal mine and coking plant. Another meaning of "Koks" seems to refer to cocaine. Herbert Grönemeyer grew up in Bochum in the Ruhr region. He has a deep connection to the people and the cityscape. When he is there, he is in his homeland. His audience there senses and knows this. In this concert, he played the "Steigerlied," an old Ruhr anthem, as well as his own composition "Bochum," and this is one of the reasons why his audience loves him.
