I Don't Like Them!

A heartfelt, Bible-centered teaching on one of the most challenging yet transformative commands in Scripture: the second greatest commandment, "love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:39; Mark 12:31; Leviticus 19:18). This message powerfully reminds us that genuine Christian living leaves no room for the casual attitude of "I just don't like that person" — no matter who they are. Drawing from God's Word across both Old and New Testaments, the lesson explores how this command applies in everyday struggles: We can (and should) hate sin — including the "garments stained by corrupted flesh" (Jude 1:23) — but never the person made in God's image. Love the sinner, hate the sin is the biblical balance. Even toward leaders and authorities — presidents, kings, or rulers we strongly disagree with — Scripture forbids cursing, reviling, or harboring hatred (Exodus 22:28; Ecclesiastes 10:20; Romans 13:1–7). Instead, we're called to submit respectfully, pray earnestly for them (1 Timothy 2:1–4), and honor them (1 Peter 2:17: "Honor all people... honor the king"). David's restraint toward Saul, despite repeated attempts on his life (1 Samuel 24), shows this isn't optional — it's reverence for God's appointed position. In family relationships, children honor and obey parents (Ephesians 6:1–4), while parents nurture without provoking wrath. Disrespect or "I just don't like you" attitudes erode God's design for blessing and long life. Most seriously, speaking against God Himself is foolish and dangerous (Psalm 14:1; Hebrews 10:31). The Pharisees' accusation against Jesus (Matthew 12:24) illustrates how far hatred can go — yet Jesus responds with truth and logic, not retaliation. At its core, this teaching calls us to live out 1 Peter 2:17: "Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king." When we cultivate the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23) — love, patience, kindness — there's "no law" against it. Praying for others, even difficult ones, opens doors to peace, godliness, and their potential salvation (1 Timothy 2:1–4). This isn't about forced friendship or agreeing with everything someone does — it's about a heart transformed by God's love, refusing bitterness and choosing respect, prayer, and mercy instead. In a divided world full of political tension, family strife, and cultural rebellion, what if we truly loved our neighbors as ourselves? The result could be lives changed, societies blessed, and glory to God.
