One more mistake to avoid is "Don't show up on the 4th of July and expect to get fireworks"... however, I do expect that to change this year. Also, boo on those who are underwhelmed by Mt.Rushmore... it's one of our absolute favorites! USA! USA! USA!

Hmmm 🤔 The whole area is beautiful. I don't know how you could be underwhelmed by Mount Rushmore or anything else in the Black hills.

My wife loss her son of age of 26. She bought a paver’s brick with his name on it. It’s in the Story book island.

The first time we drove through the area we didn't know what Wall Drug was. But we kept seeing signs for it. We needed a bathroom and the kids were starving so we stopped. We are not touristy trap people and it was overwhelming but also very endearing. Our kids LOVED it. Then because we spent so much unexpected time at Wall Drug, we got to Mount Rushmore late. We got there about 30 minutes before the lighting ceremony and we didn't even know that was a thing! It was incredible! So now we are planning our second trip through the area. We have two days to do Badlands, Custer State Park, and Mount Rushmore. It's going to be tight but I think we can manage! Thanks for this video, it was very helpful!

Going with my kids there in two weeks! Can't wait! Thanks for the tips.

You forgot to mention Badlands Nat'l Park just 10 min from Wall. Biggest mistake there or at Custer State Park is if you try to pet the Buffalo you could get de-pantsed or worse. Also, the Sturgis motorcycle rally normally takes up the first 3 weeks of August. I'm really enjoying your videos, thnx for sharing!👍

During my first ever trip to the Black Hills and specifically Mt. Rushmore in late April 2024, I remember leaving Rapid City where it was probably 55 degrees F and driving up to the monument. I grabbed my camera bag and walked up to the edge of the viewing area with a fellow photographer and started shooting and got some great photos. Then, all of a sudden, the sky went gray and it started to snow. I immediately gave my camera to the other photographer and asked him to get photos of me in the foreground of the monument and the snow coming down around me and he did. It was cold enough to snow, but not to stick. However, I have photos of it snowing at the monument with me in the foreground.

As soon as it started, the snowing stopped. Back in Rapid City later that afternoon, the temperature climbed to 72 degrees F. The weather in the Black Hills reminds me of that old cliche, "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes." It certainly is true in that part of South Dakota.

If you are thinking about going to the Black Hills definitely watch all the videos by Matt and Cheryl (We're In The Rockies)! We did and had a flawless trip. They really break it all down and I can't recommend them enough. Love these two and all the information they share.

I went for the first time last year the first week of April, only time I had to go, traveling from Utah. I had maybe 1-2 good days, the rest of the time was snow and storms. I made the best of it, but I want to go again when it is warmer.

Did you know the Hell Creek Formation spans across Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming and is one of the largest, richest deposits of fossils in America. And you can make a rest with Paleo Adventures, who will take you to a location in a private ranch, so you can dig for fossils! If you find a common fossil, you can keep it, if you find a commercial grade fossil, you can buy it but if you find a scientific grade fossil, you can't keep or buy it. But it's a really unique experience.
