I was there. The overwhelming issue was the huge number of unemployed. It disproportionately affected certain people and areas. People were not used to it and were not educated or equipped to cope with it. There had been decades where it was accepted that this was the government's concern not so much the individual's problem like now. The perception of things was different. This attitude was because of the second world war where the government and nation were united. This attitude continued for decades in an unspoken way. It was suddenly replaced with an individualistic attitude which has continued.

I LOVE how the presenter quietly corrects the question at the start. Instead of 'if there was an election...' (As on screen), he says 'if there were an election'.

Poor Michael Foot: he probably knew (in his heart) that he was 'on a hiding to nothing' and lacked the youthful energy (but not intellect) to become Prime Minister. He loved his party so much that he was prepared to endure that 'hiding' in a vain attempt to bring it together.
