Don't bring anything, I bought a lot of stuff and I didn't use them, because they provided me with everything I needed. I've just graduated from bct July 15 2021

I brought one bag with me. Basically a duffle bag. Do not bring a suitcase. Once you reception, you will be running a getting yelled at by the drill sergeants. Don't get a haircut cause you will get one when you're there. Learn your social security number. Commit it to memory because it will be the most frequent thing they ask. Stuff was cheap at the PX when I went back in 88. Ladies, leave the fake lashes at home.

Man, recruits are so lucky these days that they can watch all of these videos before they go so they know what to expect. We in the past just went in sorta blind. 😊

Dear woman going through basic training: I have sisters, I know the pain they can go through with cramps and stuff like that. Yall are bad asses and getting through training despite this is a fucking accomplishment. We are proud of you. You are absolute baddies.

I swear Swartz is so slept on, the amount of effort he puts into his videos. This guy deserves way more views. God bless and keep putting out these videos, really helps me understand the process when I go!

I left my wall locker unlocked once in basic. It wasn't tossed, but my mattress was clearly missing. Until I noticed a sheet sticking out of the bottom of the door. After opening my wall locker I found my mattress, folded in half inside. Had no idea that was even possible. Lol

You explained what females have to bring. It is amazing. I am nervous about menstrual cycle and basic training routine. Thanks for mentioning it! I cannot wait to be enlisted and start this journey!!!!

Note on the Social Security card, IF you do not have the origional, you can go online to get a copy mailed to you for most states. You should start the process of getting the certified replacement immediately. It could take quite a while for the copy to get to you.

Also note that there is a limit on the number of certified copies you can get.. so once you have it KEEP IT SAFE!

#teamswartz I leave for basic in 8 hours and I can’t believe how underprepared I was. You’re a life saver!

It’s nice revisiting these type of videos that YT recommended to me because it makes me remember of when I felt underprepared getting into BCT. I graduated quite a bit ago but miss it already. These videos were so helpful so thank you for making them! 😄

I enlisted as an Army Reservist at the age of 27 and shipped out to BCT 22 years ago. I hemmed and hawed over the idea of enlisting since high school. When I had my first meeting with my recruiter, I specifically requested to complete the enlistment process and ship out as soon as possible. He asked if I was running from the law or if I owed child support! I laughed and said no, I just wanted to hurry up and go before I chickened out. I think it was only about 4-5 weeks from that day until I shipped out

I am glad to see the packing list hasn't changed too much. I was told to bring orders / paperwork, wallet / ID card, a check to set up direct deposit, a single change of undergarments, basic hygiene items, and a little bit of cash. My recruiter picked me up early in the morning and checked my stuff before we went to the airport. I had a SMART book and read a lot on the way. It was a long travel day to fly from California to Atlanta, followed by a 4 hour bus ride to Fort Jackson, SC. I'd recommend anyone to try to sleep on the plane and bus, but I admit I couldn't due to anxiety.

I was surprised to see Drill Sergeants in the Atlanta Airport Terminal directing enlistees where to go. They weren't yelling, but they were definitely all business. I can't recall for sure if there were any Cadre on the bus, but it was dead silence the whole way. Arrival late at night to the Reception battalion was about what I expected, although it wasn't quite as intense as some of videos I had seen. Nobody was carrying any rolling luggage or garish travel bags such as seen in this video. You definitely don't want to do that!

The adjustment to military life is very hard at first, but you acclimate to it quickly once you are there. The two weeks in Reception were relatively calm, but the stress gets ratcheted up when you get picked up by your Cadre and start your actual training. For me it was a transformative experience and I came out a much better person than I was at the beginning. I was lucky as a Reservist that my unit got to do a lot of travel and we did almost all of our Annual Trainings in OCONUS locations. I went on one year long deployment as well.

I'm not a recruiter, and I no longer have any direct connection to the military. Anytime I am asked about the service, I always say "Go For It" because I never regretted it for a moment. I didn't enlist for the benefits or bonuses, but the GI Bill money was a huge benefit in paying my way through college after I got out.

Best of luck to all who step up to serve this great country of ours! GOD BLESS AMERICA

In ‘85 I brought to Basic & AIT combined a shave kit and shine kit (thanks dad!), a book, and a Walkman with a few cassettes. They let us have our Walkmans and books in the middle of Phase-Two. However, I accidentally got mine past the initial contraband check*, and had it the entire time. Those five cassettes became the soundtrack of my experience over those 6-months.

Great memories of sitting on the floor cleaning gear and shining boots jamming to Journey, Boston…

*I forgot I had it in my shave kit—they missed seeing it—and the headphones were down around my neck. I didn’t want to get in trouble, so I hid it. Then I began to use and enjoy it. The one shakedown they did, I had it in my pocket, the headphones cable running under my uniform, and the headphones, again, down around my neck. Great times.
