  The irony of the medieval feudal system was that if Henry had been a peasant he probably would've died of his initial wounds rather than linger on in agony for decades.

  There you have it. When some of his leg ulcers healed and closed, Henry’s doctors immediately opened them up. Because apparently, they also had to be left open to stop any pain that was caused by sealing off any leakage. Where additionally, a sealed wound could also lead to sepsis? <br><br>However, I think after so many years, as said, the open sores had widened and penetrated down to the bone. Causing a bone infection that was beyond any natural healing. Unless they had cleaned his wounds at the earliest time.<br><br>Which is the one basic thing the medicine of the day failed to do. To clean his wounds of all infection. Then allow them to heal by letting the wounds close over time. Which may have worked, even without antibiotics!

  I wonder if the doctors knew of amputation at this time. It would have left him essentially helpless, but he probably would have lived a little while longer.
