When you lived through the depression, it left a mark. I saw it on my father. Every person who saw those times learned to stretch a dime into a dollar.

The burger coupon story reminds me of how Cary Grant would cut the buttons of a worn out shirt before throwing it away. Both Grant and Hope had poor Edwardian era childhoods

I had an interaction with Bob Hope. I did the lights for a popular band in South Florida, and they played at Mr. Hope's Parkinson foundation event at the Fontainebleau hotel in 1978. About 5 of us got there early and saw him sitting alone at a table, and we went over to him. The leader of the band knew Bob. He talked to us and was very friendly. He gave the guitarist wife a kiss on the cheek. That night, after the band played, I went to check the stage to make sure we removed all of the equipment. As I was walking backstage to leave, Bob Hope was off to the right of me, and he walked over, stopped me and shook my hand, and said thank you for coming out tonight and helping. I don't even remember if I said anything as I wasn't expecting it. <br> I also was backstage with Muhammed Ali and had a friendly encounter with him, but I've gone on long enough.

I worked for Bob Hope 1993 - 1994 as a security at his Palm Springs home. He paid us very little. You would also have me drive him to the palm springs airport in the middle of the night. So he could use their putting green.

Bob Hope was known for going into restaurants in palm springs area, eating at a upscale dining restaurant and walking out assuming it was free because he was a celebrity. One night he did that at the chart house off hey 111 manager called the police and police went to his home and he was forced to pay.

There was an incident on camera where Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Jerry Lewis were together on stage.<br>Jerry kept acting like he was going to snatch Bing's toupee off and wouldn't stop even though Bing was getting mad.<br>Finally, Bing got mad enough to walk out and leave the stage. Jerry acted like he was innocent of causing Bing to walk out.<br>Bob told Jerry on air, he had crossed the line, and Bing had every right to leave. Jerry still tried to claim innocence, but Bob said to Jerry he was responsible for not stopping his nonsense. They changed the subject.<br>Bob Hope was old school and there were some things that crossed the line of respect and good taste.
