  Funnily enough, dirtbag is actually the official term used for people who listened to heavy metal such as iron maiden during that time. So being a teenage dirtbag isn't just self-deprecating, it's more about the stigma it carried at the time and how it made him (the man who made the song) be outcast and feel shunned.

  I like how this focused on the ex a lot at first, because it serves as a great foil to the original version. Especially when you start singing about the original guy. He was convinced he would never have a shot, but we never truly know how others perceive us. We're our own worst critics, but luckily, that doesn't stop other people from caring about us inspite of what we consider our flaws. Nicely done. I hope Wheatus sees this.
