  Hearing an American be shocked by things as normal as it is in this video to a Swede, makes me terrified by how it would actually be to be a student in America.

  Imagine having your taxes actually go to something other than outfitting your president with diapers... or else being pocketed by elected officials.<br><br>Yeh, I&apos;d say it&apos;s a pretty standard Swedish high school. 😂<br>Also, Uni is free. Just need the grades to get in.

  In Sweden, you apply to college in your last year, so the students in the video are probably around the age of 18-19.

  The guy that said he had to go to university didn&apos;t say that due to social or parental pressure. Sure there can be some of that but mainly he said it because of what he was studying. He was doing a course that is very broad towards natural sciences. Rather then something that is more specialised towards a certain career. So it is more general and it would be hard then to get a specific job. So he is supposed to go to university to continue the education and specialise in whatever he decides.

  To clarify, in Sweden school is mandatory until year 9 (15yrs old). After that you go three years in &quot;gymnasiet&quot; where you decide what to study. These students were studying science which is &quot;högskoleförberedande&quot; (preparing for university) but you can also study building, electricity, sales, etc which are &quot;yrkesförberedande&quot; (preparing for working). This is also becoming more and more popular. Additionally, gymnasieantagningen (from grades f-9 to gymnasiet)is much more stressfull for swedish students. There is a culture of waiting for university and you often see 30-, 40- or 50-yearolds studying at university. This is possible for many people because university is free and you also get a little money each month for studying (and you can take student loans with very low interest rates). This way you don&apos;t have to worry as much about the financial aspects.

  Swedish life is much less a competition than life in the USA. You just enjoy your time, and work to support it. Do your best, but avoid comparing yourself to others. There are margins. You can be yourself.

  They were going to graduate, so they were 18-19. Also you can&apos;t have a driving license in Sweden until 18.<br>We start school at 6 years old and finish compulsory school at age 15 after grade 9 (after 10 years in school). You have to attend these years in school by law. Home schooling is not allowed. When we are 16-19 years old we go 3 years of &quot;high school&quot; called Gymnasiet before we graduate. This was filmed the last year in Gymnasiet. You chose Gymnasiet depending on what type of orientation they have, a bit more similar to USAmerican Collage.

  He wasn&apos;t saying you have to go to college because of some economic pressure of familial expectation.<br><br>He was saying that he was attending a natural sciences focused high school program, he got the follow up question what he was hoping that education would let him work with and he said engineering, you need to go to college after. In Sweden you choose your high school program to either prepare you for a profession such and construction, service or mechanics or one that prepares you for university such as natural or social sciences.<br><br>Now most people do go to college.<br><br>But he was saying that he has to because he had chosen that program. Not that he has to because he would be looked down on if he&apos;d chosen a trade program.
