When I've played the Panov, I've done it because I didn't know Caro-Kann theory, but if black plays 4...e6, which seems natural, I swap of black's dsb by hook or by crook, swap off the heavy pieces, and end up with a strong knight versus a bad bishop. The position kind of plays itself.

I sort of hinted at this in my other post, but I see the "main lines" of the Panov being a battle of control over color complexes. There are lots of opportunities for white to force black to put a pawn on d5, and then after swapping dsbs, white has an enormous positional advantage.

Of course, you know more than me -- I range from a lichess 2200 when I'm ON to a 1900, but I've also read Karpov's book. There are lots of Karpovian "and white is winning." "how?" "Pretend you're black. What's your move?" "oh."
