Plato spent his entire career arguing that the philosopher is the only person truly equipped to govern — and then spent thirty years failing every time he tried to influence a real government. Does that failure make his philosophy more honest, or does it make it hollow? What do you think Plato actually believed in by the end?

☕ Support The Long Shadow and get the full written video scripts (text) and audio formats → https://buymeacoffee.com/thelongshadow

Plato did not fail, rather he has not yet succeeded or one should say that the world has not succeeded in realising the truth and beauty and goodness of his philosophy that can only be realised as those qualities become our own and command everything we do. This is part of the Lord of the universe as expounded by John Todd Ferrier, God is love and when we truly know love everything we think and do and feel will be governed by love. This is the ideal which all spiritual paths have as their purpose to achieve. When that love is truly embedded in our being everything we sink and feel and do will be beautiful, everything will be true that is truly an embodiment of God, of Good !
These saw saw very close to the philosophy as propounded by Plotinus Neoplatonism which has influence the whole of western Society without it fully becoming understood and practice. It is the philosophy of all good people attempting to bring those beautiful ideals into life here and now.

The Republic is 'careful and elegant'!!! The book where wandering wombs are seriously discussed? Where sound vibrations are sensed near the ... LIVER! Where children are taken into battle to encourage their bloodthirstyness and purposely put in danger? Where the less then perfect child is sent away from society? Where parents become breeding stock and hand over their kids to the state? THIS is perfect and elegant?

The popularity of institutionally coin issuing states after 600 BC inherently encouraged democratic ideologies, and Plato was early out the blocks developing a full blooded anti-democratic ideology. Every generation since has run up against the sort of problems with democracy Plato lived through, so turns back to the guy who first got control of the franchise: his anti-democratic narrative.

Thinking on that, 50 years back, I would have pointed to his "Lies are a medicine for the state" as my core objection to the Plato. Today I am less sure. That the general population can become so dangerously willful that it has to be controlled by lies I find loathsome, but history demands I at least consider it. And fair play to the guy, Plato did introduce his Noble Lie apologetically.

My big problem with Plato today has become his nuptial number. On my reading the nuptial number was not introduced as a lie. It seems to me an outrageously bonkers idea that Plato genuinely believed. We do need to reject (say) David Icke's reptilian conspiracy theory - but Plato's nuptial number takes us to pot and kettle territory.

Civilization is based on reason. In principle it doesn't matter if one or many rule, but that those in power act reasonably. The advantage of democracy thus lies in statistics, which at the same time is its biggest disadvantage. The task of a true philosopher is to guide the dumbasses to reason. Quite a challenge since those tend to follow their primitive instincts...
