I was 16 when my 13 yr old sister got schizophrenia, then my 14 yr old daughter got schzophrenia, I am almost 70, been caregiver/ living with people with schizophrenia for approx 55 years. My daughter had her one medication reduced by 50% after 30 years on it. Although all kinds are different this worked for me.
They must do everything themself that they can
They must be busy all day and do their chores like any other person in the house
Do not allow manipulation
They must be trained to take small responsibilty
They must be trained to self motivate
Never raise your voice
Your emotions affect them, keep control
Treat them with dignity...this is only my opinion and a few points that worked for me. I am still caring for my daughter she is now 41

My brother (24) was diagnosed with schizophrenia after 3 years of being homeless. He came to me a few months ago finally asking for help (I’ve tried dozens of times with no real success and a lot of pain). It’s become extremely taxing both mentally and financially. He goes in an out of psychosis and the voices and visions are so loud and real to him that he can barely hold a simple conversation most days. I convinced him to speak to a psychologist, but he refuses medication and is skeptical that he even needs medical help in the first place. I can’t help feeling like this is all for nothing and trying to get him housing, a job, and mental health resources is just a waste of effort and I’m just burying myself in debt and disappointment. I’m still trying every day, but I don’t think I can do this for the rest of my life, even if he is my brother. It’s just so sad and defeating. I hope one day he can find his way.

I’ve only listened to this for 25 mins and am already coming to the comments to say this is by far the best resource I’ve found for how to help loved ones living with mental illness. Suddenly, the weight on my shoulders is feeling just that little bit lighter - thank you!

I’ve been dealing for over 19 years wit my daughter’s mental illness! I’ve educated myself, go to personal counseling, and groups. I exercise, eat as well as I can and try to do self care. BUT when she is constantly demeaning me and blaming me for her life choices I can only take so much. Those choices have involved drug use and poor choices in “friends” and relationships. She has a mental health team but she holds it together just enough to side step the real issues.
So although I appreciate your willingness to try to be supportive and you did hit on many helpful topics here, there is a point when the caregiver is exhausted.
Every one in my family has given up and they tell me to stop trying to help her.

I just found this video and want to Thank You for posting. My 30 year old daughters schizophrenia popped out in 2021 and she's been basically homeless for over two years and couch surfing with family. After a very rocky childhood for her, we had been living estranged for over a decade with a lot of damage to our relationship and unhealed pain. I know that the challenges we are facing now come with many blessings (a.i. it could be way worse), but I am about to get a place for the two of us and become her caregiver and with our history and now her condition, I have so many fears around it. With no experience or past exposure to this type of mental unhealth, I am researching everything out there in preparation and it's very reassuring to hear about your experiences and successes and advice. This is so helpful and comforting! Following! 🙏🙏🙏

Thank you for this. It’s people like you who speak out that help us understand the mental illness so much more. My brother has schizophrenia and it’s been quite the journey. At the moment he does not want to seek treatment, he’s severely depressed, but we are still here ! And will always be here for him!! We’ve learned so much, especially how this is not a sprint it’s a marathon! Our faith is big and it’s conversations like these you two are letting us hear that give me and my family hope. Blessings to all who are here on this journey as well. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Thank you - I have 2 siblings who have schizophrenia and I am their main caregiver. It reminds me to begin with compassion.

My son is 38 and is homeless in Utah and thinks he is Christ. I can’t sleep at night, haunted with panic attacks and every time I try to talk to him, he gives me “terms“. He also likes to diagnose me. I just don’t even know what to do anymore. I know he’s sick so I don’t want to abandon him.
