Movie Knuckles is definitely the best incarnation of Knuckles, they work in all the best aspects of the character from the games cartoons etc.

 3:48 Dora also gets high on shrooms in the Dora movie. That's gotta be one of the wildest kids movies of the decade

 @1:27:44

The drowning theme is used but as a movie style. It starts when Sonic sucked in the bubble which restarts it, you can hear the classic theme again later.
You can hear it better in the soundtrack. Its "You Don't Have to Be Alone Anymore" starts at 0:39

 @ 10:00 RIP James Earl Jones who passed away last year, he was an absolute legend and will be missed. Fun fact, my mom worked at a hospital and he was there and she got him to call me up doing both Darth Vader and Mufasa. I can't remember it because I was like 5 but it's something both my parents tell me constantly and I'm glad it happened

 10:21 - Gareth, gonna have to out-British you here - David Prowse was from Bristol, not the North. He was an unsung hometown hero for us Bristolians.

 The Kongs are the kart people because they're greese monkeys

But really it's probably because they've kinda been associated with vehicles since DKC started the mine carts, rocket barrels, actually they have fire arms I think they are consistently the most technologically advanced after Bowser

 After they do Sonic 3, I'd be down for a Brainscratch Rifftrack on The Super Mario Bros Movie and especially A Minecraft Movie (aka The Chicken Jockey Incident of 2025)
