I kept hesitating on stuff at work because some old feedback stuck in my head about not being the right fit for certain projects. Turns out I wasn't really hesitating, I was just waiting for someone else to tell me I could try. A friend mentioned this book "the improvised man", it's a book for guys who grew up without a true father figure, and something it says about the gap between what you do out of habit and what you'd actually choose if you checked with yourself made it click. I was running the externally-validated version on autopilot and had stopped asking what I actually wanted to do. Started saying yes to things without waiting for permission first. People around me react different now, not because I'm different but because I stopped halfway checking their face the whole time.
