This young lady has been a favorite of mine for about a decade. On top of being among the most talented composers/performers of all time, the wisdom she displays with regard to her critics belies her youth. Uncommon grace is another of her assets. When one of her pieces seemed to end (but didn’t) on a chord where people started clapping, in subsequent performances, she warns folks ahead of time that there’s a bit more to the piece to save audience members the potential embarrassment! And look up the video where she improvises original new melodies from four notes chosen at random. This trilingual (yes!) genius deserves every glowing accolade given to her.

Bartok's quartets have beautiful moments, and i really mean things that would be considered "traditionally" beautiful. You gotta listen to more than just 2 minutes of quartet #4

It’s always amusing to hear others lecture creative people on what they “ought” to do.

The older I get the more appreciation I have for dissonant music. I don't think this compares wrote it because they wanted to create something ugly but because it's the language in which they were able to record what they wanted to express. And perfect harmonies aren't the only way to make beautiful music.

I think Alma is a very interesting musician and I love that she composes the way she likes and not the way anyone tries to dictate. But I also do wonder how her philosophy will develop during the coming decades. Maybe it'll change completely, maybe it will just be modified a bit. But I hope it will develop and make in a way that suits her own personal development and it will be interesting to watch.

Her violin concerto now ranks as one of my favourites.

This composer is still young, and she will evolve. But she's off to a good start, with good values. I hope she builds on this and creates new depths in her music, like Arvo Pärt has done, expressing pain without sacrificing beauty.

I've loved Bartok since I first heard him when I was eight. In my twenties, I listened to the Bartok string quartets over and over. I love Bach, too, and Shostakovich. There are composers I don't like, so I don't listen to them. Beauty is in the eye, the ear, the mind of the beholder. I think anyone creating anything gets to create according to their own voice, just as all us listeners and players get to choose what we want to listen to and play. If someone is all happy about some form of music I can't abide, I just don't say anything; who am I to rain on their parade?

I do find Deutscher's music to be gorgeous, and I'm glad to hear a little more about her as she moves into adulthood, but I haven't followed her. I hadn't hear this Emporer's New Waltz before, I'm going to have to buy me a copy, what you played here has me very intrigued and curious. Looking back into history, I don't think modern life is any more ugly or less beautiful than any past time; we've always had cruelty and violence right along side the best that nature and human beings are. Being able to turn cacaphonic elements of modern life into beautiful music strikes me as a magical and very valuable contribution; which, for me, has been what attracted me to such as Bartok and Shostakovich.
