  Bear with me—this is probably gonna be a long &nbsp;and nerdy comment. Y’all are right—IRA=Irish Republican Army. The situation in Ireland was really complicated and lasted for literal centuries, but basically Irish Catholics and Irish Protestants were at war with one another. The Protestants wanted to stay under Britain’s rule, so the British government favored them, plus the government was pretty much all Protestant, and Protestants and Catholics were still at odds with one another in general like they had been for hundreds of years. The Irish Catholics and the IRA, on the other hand, wanted become independent (aka a republic) again. In the show, Campbell and Grace are on the British/Protestant side. Things really kicked off three years before the show starts when some of the Catholic side rose up against the British/Protestants, but they were fighting the actual government, who not only had access to all the guns it could ever need, but could also prevent the IRA from arming itself enough. Because of that, the IRA had to smuggle weapons into the country if they wanted to continue fighting. Birmingham—where this show is set—is on a canal network (“the cut”) that could eventually get the guns to the Irish Sea more or less on the down-low, especially if someone clever like Tommy organized it, so Tommy’s illegal gun stash would have probably been the IRA’s best case scenario, and they’d be willing to pay him big money. At the same time, you’ve just had a Communist uprising in Russia where Communists overthrew the existing government (a monarchy), which inspired Communist movements all over the place, &nbsp;especially in areas like Birmingham that had a lot of industrial workers who were fed up with low pay and terrible conditions. This made lots of governments, including the British, extremely nervous that they’d get overthrown, too. As a result, Communists groups and leaders like Fred would have been watched carefully by the government and faced a similar situation as the IRA when it came to accessing weapons. They would have probably been prepared to enter a bidding war with the IRA for a weapons cache like Tommy’s, which obviously drives up the price and makes things more lucrative for him. That said, it’s so dangerous for Tommy to get involved with these groups because the British government was doing everything they could to stop them from getting their hands on weapons, including sending people like Campbell and Grace to sniff out and eliminate suppliers, which puts the Peaky Blinders and its gambling operation at risk instead of flying under the radar like they’ve done until this point. For Tommy, the reward is worth the risk; for Polly (and probably everyone else), it’s too reckless. Sorry for writing a novel, but this stuff is my thing, and knowing a little about these groups makes the show click a lot faster. P.S. I’m so glad y’all are watching this! At first it might seem like a little bit of a slow burn compared to some other shows, but the payoff is definitely worth it.
