Cary Tagawa was SO iconic as Shang Tsung, that Neatherrealm Studios actually got him to reprise the role in the videogames. Definitely one of my favorite movie villains of all time.

Fun Fact: They couldn't afford to pay Christopher Lambert for filming in Thailand, so they were only going to have him in indoor scenes.  They didn't know that he owned a house in Thailand and his family was living there already, so he offered to film in Thailand for free (as in, no extra money beyond what they had already agreed to for his indoor scenes).  The movie wouldn't be close to what it was without that happy coincidence.  Every scene with Christopher Lambert outdoors he basically donated to the movie.

The Mortal Kombat theme was absolutely the anthem for any and all laser tag in the 90s.

The move that Lui Kang used to beat Reptile was called the Bicycle kick.

"Was there a sequel to this?" Whoo, boy. I don't know how to answer that.

I have a cool story about the original game. Before its release there was a teaser commercial with kids running down the street shouting "MORTAL COMBAT" in heavily modulated voices. At the time I wasn't really into fighting games nor did I own a Sega Genesis system, but that commercial hooked me and my 2 brothers. The day before the game's release I went to the local toy store with the goal of buying a Genesis system and preordering a copy of the game. So when I told the guy behind the counter this he looked both ways then leaned towards me and asked, "Do you want the game now?" Me [in total disbelief]: "Are you serious?!" Him: "We got the game in this morning but we're not supposed to sell them until tomorrow, but I'll make an exception for you since you're buying the Genesis system." I get home and take the Sega out of the bag and my brothers asked if I was able to reserve a copy of the game to which I replied, "No". Both of them: "What?! Why not?" I then smiled and took the game out of the bag. They called their friends up and within 20 minutes they were all over our place and we played late into the night. Ah, memories.

The Soundtrack to this was the first CD I ever bought. Johnny Cage's nut-punch was one of his moves from the original game.

Even as kids we knew this movie was cheesy silliness but that reptile track still goes hard and was a banger at house parties.

Liu Kang noticing Reptile hiding is a reference to the original game and Reptile being a secret character to fight, hence his discovery leads to a fight in a hidden room.
