Abeille : l'être le plus important de la planète

The insect that votes without a leader, counts to five, and has been flying since the age of dinosaurs. The Honeybee — a documentary. Behind the buzzing we dismiss with a wave of the hand lies one of the most complex living systems on the planet. This documentary follows the honeybee, or Apis mellifera, through nature, science, and history to discover an animal that almost no one really looks at. We think we know the bee. It buzzes, it stings, it makes honey. Yet, the word itself encompasses more than twenty thousand species, and the one we live alongside is only the most extreme exception. This film starts from this misunderstanding to reconstruct, piece by piece, the reality of an insect we revered and feared long before we understood it. We see why its true place in the world has almost nothing to do with the jar of honey at breakfast. The paradox is simple. What makes the bee famous counts for almost nothing in the balance of life, and what a portion of our food supply depends on, it accomplishes unknowingly, silently. How can a creature that fits on a fingernail carry such a weight without being aware of it, and how can a brain barely bigger than a grain do what was once thought to be reserved for humans? The film seeks the answer where we least expect it. Through the anatomy, evolution, sensory world, and behavior of this animal, the documentary shows how a tiny worker bee becomes a fragment of a much larger being. We will see how a hive is built that makes decisions without a leader, how a language circulates among thousands of bodies, and why this insect has accompanied humanity from the earliest cave paintings to the emblems of power. Little by little, the image of an animal whose discretion conceals an unsuspected depth is revealed. This fresh perspective arrives at a pivotal moment, just as we are beginning to understand the bee, at the very instant it is starting to disappear. Taking the time to observe it closely is perhaps also a way to better understand what our own world depends on, and to appreciate what a silent creature carries in our place.
