How Old DOS Games ACTUALLY Sounded (If You Had Money)

The craziest thing was. None of us PC gamers back in the 80s/90s ever knew what MT-32 ever was. We always saw it in the setup menu. But it was never mention in any magazines or on-line chats at the time. It was never talked about in the owners manual of the supported game itself either. The name of it was so vague, we never developed enough curiosity to warrant further investigation. It's crazy to think that it would take over 30 years, before we not only knew what it was, but the fact that it was never an actual sound card, but a external MIDI synth module that cost a bloody fortune.

Fun fact: If you ever called up Sierra technical support in the mid-90s, the hold music was the MT-32 versions of some of their latest soundtracks. That was the only way I ever heard King's Quest V's theme rendered in that way before YouTube.

The sound engineers who created the fake polyphonic PC speaker soundtracks were fucking geniuses.

Another funny story… i was the apprentice of Andy Newell who wrote music for the secret of Monkey Island. I did over 100 ads with the guy, and he was a monster composer/sound designer. i started writing for him in 1998. And now I am writing music for Double Fine, which is Tim Schafer’s company. :)

My mother was a musician and got an MT-32 - it took me years to actually use it for gaming, but I replayed Monkey Island just to listen to the music!

I can tell you why Sierra included MT-32 support despite almost nobody owning one: it is because the process of arranging for Adlib would start with composing for MT-32. Since the music was being written for MT-32 in the first place anyway, they might as well include the MT-32 version if they had room.

Next we are going to be told that all the visuals were actually designed in 4K but nobody could afford the correct graphics card to display it!!!

I had no fcking idea. Playing games for almost 40 years and I had no fcking idea there are soundtracks I've literally never heard before all because of a fcking soundcard. WOW. thank you so much for this. Monkey Island sounds AMAZING

The difference of the soundcards is crazy. I didn't know it was like that lol

I talked my Dad into getting a Soundblaster specifically for Wing Commander back in the day. When the Maestro taps the orchestra into attention from the tune up, and then the theme rolls... blew my f'n mind. After that, it was onto all the Sierra stuff. What a blessing to have a Dad who worked at a business that provided tech to schools and other businesses in our region. I was tinkering with PCs from early on, but that soundcard upgrade was a "holy shit" moment.
