Herc, your story is so amazing. You hustled enough to build a soccer career as an outsider and now you built a bilingual media career without following the traditional college path.

Great topic, I was a board member and volunteer coach for a small Club in SoCal. Our goal was to provide a means for underserved kids to play organized soccer against the big clubs. It takes a lot of time and money for so many things like securing fields, playing in a Cal South accredited league, trying to get people to volunteer, etc. I did everything from ferrying kids back and forth to painting fields to fixing light towers. Many times I had to pay for kids uniforms or their club fees. And thank you for bringing up the cost and time it takes to get coaching badges. What a joke.

Favorite episode! Been watching these two goats since Fútbol Americas and can genuinely say this was an episode I listened to every second and had to constantly pause to appreciate what was being said. More of these heartfelt episodes, goats!

I might be going on a limb here… but I’ve always kind of felt that the reason some of these quote “U.S. soccer legends” don’t want to have these pay to play conversations, downplay them, or even support pay to play is because, aside from it exposing a lot about the system, it might give themselves a feeling of illegitimacy of where they currently stand. There is also the uncomfortable conversation about wealth disparities between demographics. Much like on the political stage, that conversation will cause those who are made uncomfortable to paint the other side as “professional victims” when really all we’re trying to do is open the opportunity pool so that the national team can actually play the best of the best and maybe even hope to hoist the trophy one day.
I really just want to see a world where Mexico and the U.S. are competing with the best of the best deep in to the tournament every 4 years.

Really enjoyed listening to both of your guys experiences

PG County native here (I remember Seb hosting the DC United pre/post shows on Comcast Sportsnet).
I'm a 36yr second gen (Trini) and even though I grew up watching American football and soccer, I took American football seriously. My parents had the idea that in this country "that's a rich people sport (soccer). Don't waste your time."
I don't think I had the skills to make it, but this is how most people of immigrant descent think in our area.

We're Americans living in Denmark. My 9 year old's yearly registration is around $275 a year. There aren't 5000 leagues. You play for your local club and its affiliated with the Danish Superliga club within the area. Levels within the local club are A, B, and C, with A being the highest. Rarely do we pay for tournaments, and if so, around $15. Travel expenses are marginal as Denmark is a small country, but its also not like we're traveling to Germany, Sweden, or the Netherlands for a tournament every weekend, so it's doable. In short, America is screwed. Money grabs everywhere, not to mention the subpar coaching.
