I understand where John Wayne was coming from, but they represented two different, very different eras. This was is an exceptional Western. Honestly though, “The Outlaw Josie Wales” is probably my all time favorite Eastwood Western.

One of Eastwood's best movies. I always interpreted it as the avenging spirit of Marshal Jim Duncan dishing out retribution for his murder.

Probably my favorite Clint Eastwood western. The take no b.s. from anyone is his signature style that you see in this and his other movies.

This may be obvious to everyone, but I have always seen High Plains Drifter as a commentary on High Noon, a supernatural riff on what would have happened if Gary Cooper had not survived his final gunfight . Just as Pale Rider is a definite homage to Shane, with several plot points directly lifted from the earlier Alan Ladd film. I often view these films as back to back double features.

HPD is a classic Eastwood film. One of my favorites. In fact, I pretty much have it memorized line for line. The cowardly townsfolk got exactly what they deserved poetically executed by the avenging stranger. The ending is quite ambiguous, which I think is brilliant. Pure Clint Eastwood badassery!

I watched it in the Theater the first week it was released, and was captivated by it. It's one of those films I never forgot. Many of Clint's films are that way for me.
