Canon made great motors back in the 80’s. They were and still are popular upgrades for model trains.

I like the videos where you've gotten the cd player working. I need happy endings 🙂

I had one of those. It's death will be the unobtainium laser pickup. Revox may be lighter, but is a FAR better machine. I used to repair CD players and went through quite a lot of them. This allowed me to make a mental list of what to avoid. As much as I LIKE the Denon.... I sold it on because once it fails.... doorstop. And yes, it's a gem to work on, as you found out. 😁
I'm actually amazed at the care that went into many of these players, and what they were reduced to in the end.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a preference for using test CDs from the same year as the player. 😊

I love this beast—heavy, solid, and quiet as death. When listening, it’s full of detail thanks to the quality of its mechanics. Its weakest point is the analog section. Only one DAC for two channels—very good one, but not the top-of-the-line version, which is a shame. The filters seem a bit over-engineered. On top of that, the analog ground paths are terribly routed. However, after a few minor modifications, it jumped up two classes :). I compared it to players costing up to $20,000, and it didn’t come out the loser! I plan to turn it into a transport someday. Greetings to all lovers of this marvel :).

Thats a beautiful player, well done! These early CD player mechanisms and the wildly different solutions are pretty fascinating! The pickup is indeed a Toshiba OPH-32 (or TAOHS-L), these early generation pickups are apparently not the best at reading/playing not perfect discs. Vintage audio laser (a french website dedicated to early gen CD players and CD technology) has some pretty interesting information regarding these pickups, CD players and their repair. Absolutely worth a read!

Sewing machine oil and 3-in-1 oil (which I thought were the same thing) is something I haven't thought about in a long time. When I was a kid, everybody's house had a sewing machine and make some of their own clothes. Buying fabric and patterns was common, at least in my part of suburbia (Orange County, CA). That went away sometime in the 80s.

My mom and sisters would also crochet, knit, needlepoint and for a time macrame. One sister even learned to tat. They still do some knitting, tatting and crochet, but that just seems like an old timey thing.

Those white roller-like balls on the transport are more than likely Delrin.
