One of my favourite films.

Took a day off work to watch at Metro Centre in 2002 and then watched all of the commentaries when it came out on DVD in 2003. Brought back loads of memories of my time in Manchester as a student in 1987-90.

The best thing on the dvd is the Tony Wilson commentary. Adds a whole new perspective to the film. Recommend watching it with his commentary switched on!

One of my favorite films. It is so unconventional in the way it tells the story.
Tony Wilson, as a character in the film, is so damn funny. He seems to be the only intellectual in a city of brutes. Always pretentious, always the idealist. Noone shows him any respect, although secretly they really do respect and appreciate the things he does. It creates such a great dynamic in every scene. Not an easy thing to pull off, but the cast does an excellent job of it.

This is bizzare, I watched this for the first time only last night! I have to agree that a few moments reminded me very much of an Alan Partridge skit but it never took me out the film too much. Didn’t think I’d get on with the camera quality at first but the documentary feel definitely grew on me. Overall it was a really fun watch and especially interesting as a fan of Joy Division and Happy Mondays. loved the cameos from Gary Mounfield and Mark E Smith too and I’m always over the moon to see Paddy Considine in anything.
Need to check out Sid & Nancy next, and to rewatch the Doors, I haven’t watched that in a long time but remember enjoying it.

Excellent choice! Watched it at the cinema when it was released, the soundtrack is amazing celebrating Manchester's golden era of music, thanks for your analysis.

I hope one day soon you review the 1994 NZ cult classic “Once Were Warriors”

Love that 'it's not how it looks love' scene with the 2 Tony's having a 'nosh' with the hookers in the back of the van 😏
Plus that little moment where we see the Joy Division drummer has been left behind on the roof. Still drumming! 😄

I will join the recommendation bandwagon and suggest reviewing "White of the Eye," one of the few films by Scottish artist Donald Cammell. Arrow gave it the full Blu-ray treatment.
