  Consumption based living is also because of social pressure. When I lived in Pakistan, I used a sasta nokia bar (in 2015). Everyone used to laugh at me. They said mobile chor tumko itna sasta phone rakhnay par maaray gey. But I was saving every penny to move abroad (us waqt exchange rate itna bura nahi thaa). I would never eat out, and never buy brands etc. My colleagues were so mean to me and thought I was poor. Even my dad and siblings would be taunting me ke paisay kamati ho tou kharch karo. My investment was my move abroad. Things like toefl, GRE and university applications cost money that I paid for all. I understand many people can't save today to move abroad because of bad exchange rate, but like you said there are better investment opportunities other than shaadi ke menu and lawn ka jora.

  My phone is 5 years old and it costed me 60% of my salary 5 years ago. But its only equal to about 20% now.
