Have you ever bought an art supply that everyone recommended… but it just didn’t work for you?
I’m really curious what materials didn’t work for your creative process.

I really love the "negative" review ( even if the product is subjectively good). It's nice to know all the pros and cons of each product

The white gel pens, all of them. They clog too easily. There are some tricky ways I've tried to revive them but they never flow well. I think it might be the humidity of my room or something.

I like using dip pen and brush more as time goes on. Those are simple. You can turn anything into a dip pen if you don't mind potentially ruining it for anything else. My white gel pens now dip in Deleter White 1. They work fine that way 😂

It's difficult to know what you truly need when you first start out. I used to think that buying professional art supplies would save me money, but I've realized that I should actually begin with the basics and figure out my own style before investing in materials that support it. This process can be challenging, but videos like yours are incredibly helpful for gaining insights and perspectives that aren't commonly shared. Thank you so much :)

Something I really hate it how many companies don’t seem to have small sets of things anymore for a good price. Like every newer paint maker that I think I want to try only has large sets. Why??? I just want to try them out just let me buy some singles or a simple base set.

Yes some of us feel quite differently. I love my micron pens and intense pencils.

My first set of artist's color pencils were Prismacolor--48, the largest set available, a real luxury. That was 73 years ago, when I turned 11. I used them often, they were beautiful colors; they sharpened easily and did not break. That gift from my parents left me with an enduring kind feeling toward Prismas, and yes, I did buy the 150 set.
I prefer other brands now, but Prismas still have a place--though smaller, despite so many more pencils.
Great video, thanks.

Inktense makes more sense if you remember it's ink.

I will say: Prismacolor color pencils used to be good quality in the late 90s early 2000s but I noticed a huge shift in their quality when they no longer were using the manufactor they used to use. (I want to say 2015 was when the shift happened as I noticed when I went to pick up new pencils, they looked different and felt... weirdly "lighter" and more "brittle" than I was used to. I donno how else to discribe it). I didn't realize they changed manufactors until later and watched Sarah's Video talking about the "fake Prismacolor" discourse.

I think the reason why they're seen as the "top dog" still because not many people know what to look for in a color pencil at first and you can buy them in Office Depot and Amazon compared to some other brands. I've noticed people leave the Prismas behind as soon as they try other brands that are out there for their actual needs.

I had missed the more creamy nature of the prismacolor used to have so I had gone and looked for something similar. Artexx's color pencil felt like how the old school prismas used to be but less likely to break as the cores aren't off center and the weight of the cores felt closer to what they used to be. They also blend beautifully with the Prismacolorless blender without losing their color that some brands have happened. I haven't found any other brand give a colorless blender yet but it could be that most people don't use them and thus I don't see it.

Prismacolor also has probably the worst drawing pencil sets. The graphite is too hard in the entire range of hardness and the "6B" and "9B" actually has that matallic sheen that you don't want in your darkest pencils. It will also never be dark enough. I know you don't need all that, but I'm also giving fair warning if anyone is like "Why don't you try Prisma's drawing pencils?" cus they will fustrate you more than they should.

With Inktense, I do enjoy them a lot. I got the very small set within the discount section of Micheals as I just really wanted to try them. *However*, I like them not because they are the "best watercolor pencil". That would probably be more Fiber-castle and even then I didn't use them as often as I would like. Inktense works like Indian Ink in a pencil for me. I like mixing watercolor and colored Indian Ink because of the effects I get with the two combined. Unfortantly people think Inktense is a "watercolor" pencil and thus they pitch it as such. On the tin itself they're actually "ink pencils" but it's small, so people don't really look. Everything else though I do see the fustration because I do remember having trouble gadging if the color of the ink tense was going to read correctly with the peices I was working on. I haven't had a true mishap yet, but that may be because of my own experiences with indian ink in general being a really hard read in the bottle vs on the paper (purple is netorious for being practually a black when you don't water it down enough for example. I've messed that up multiple times with liquid indian ink.)

>_> I do the biggest taboo and just use watercolor even on normal sketchbook paper. Does it buckle and all that? yes. Do I care? No. It's a sketchbook. It's ment for experimenting and whatnot. Having played with watercolor on the proper medium and even bristleboard, I knew what I got myself into. If I don't want it buckle I will pull out watercolor paper, but just getting into the watercolor even with the buckling was just so.... freeing. I could just bring one book even if I just wanted to sketch or watercolor or both. Then again I was also carrying a 14x11 in sketchbook everywhere for a time soooo I just didn't want to carry more than one.... I like the smaller sketchbooks and have been bringing around those instead but still same thing applied.

I've found great used art supplies on eBay that are less expensive than buying them brand new. It gives me a chance to try a new medium before committing to buying a full set of paint, pencils, etc. I'm working on not buying art supplies but fell off the wagon this month and just got Lyra Rembrandt watercolor pencils and WN gouache off of ebay. I do like the W & N gouache....it is affordable. Holbein and Schmincke are lovely too. But, I need to use what I have before buying a different brand. I've made sketchbooks too, but found the stitched type too hard to make, so the accordion style works for me. Thanks for the video.
