Born in Los Angeles, he spent much of his childhood in Pakistan before returning to the United States in 1980. He comes from a distinguished artistic family, with his father Naeem Tahir being an actor and writer, and his mother Yasmeen Tahir known as one of the iconic voices of Radio Pakistan. His maternal grandparents were celebrated writers Imtiaz Ali Taj and Hijab Imtiaz Ali, the latter also remembered as the first Muslim female pilot. Tahir studied business economics at the University of California, Berkeley before pursuing theatre, later earning a Master of Fine Arts from Harvard University's American Repertory Theater Institute. Tahir made his film debut in Disney's The Jungle Book (1994) and went on to build a successful career in Hollywood. He is best known for portraying Raza in Marvel's Iron Man (2008), Captain Richard Robau in Star Trek (2009), President Patel in Elysium (2013), and Laqqa in the Pakistani fantasy film Umro Ayyar – A New Beginning (2024). His extensive television career includes appearances in popular series such as Grey's Anatomy, Lost, 24, The West Wing, Alias, Supernatural, Scandal, Prison Break, NCIS: Los Angeles, Warehouse 13, American Crime, Once Upon a Time, 12 Monkeys and The Old Man. He has also voiced characters in animated productions and video games, including Injustice, Dead Space and Call of Duty: Black Ops III. Beyond film and television, Tahir has earned acclaim on stage, notably for his lead performance as Othello in the Shakespeare Theatre Company's 2016 production of Othello in Washington, D.C. In his personal life, he married Pakistani model and actor Zara Tareen in 2021, though the marriage ended after four months and their divorce was finalised in 2023. During a visit to Pakistan in 2019, he appeared on Samina Peerzada's web series Speak Your Heart, and in 2024 featured in a PakWheels vlog alongside Umro Ayyar co-star Ali Kazmi. With a career spanning more than three decades across film, television, theatre and voice acting, Faran Tahir remains one of the most accomplished actors of Pakistani origin working in international entertainment.
