I read this book when I was a kid. To my amazement, when I saw this video, I still remembered one detail. Balzac described Grandet as a prudent businessman. He went to negotiate deals but he often said "I'll have to consult with my wife". The truth was he never talk to his wife about business, it was just his way to back out a deal if necessary.

that's not frugality, its a symptom of low self esteem! People who hate themselves struggle to justify spending the money, effort..et on themselves and as a result those closest to them(wife & kids)!

I know this is a fictional story, but the psychological issue with the father and money is real issue. He either suffers from chrometophobia, money dysmorphia, or scarcity mindset. My father suffers from it and his attitude alienates him from us (his family). It is a true mental sickness.
