In 1971 , in a phone in with the BBC during Wimbledon , I asked Fred Perry who was the GOAT . He said Tilden because ‘ he could do anything ‘.

Contrary to what actor John Forsythe said I this documentary on Bill Tilden, it was not Tilden's forehand that turned around his rivalry with "Little" Bill Johnston. Rather it was when Tilden after losing yet again to Johnston in the U.S. National Championship (which years later became the U.S. Open) was allowed by a friend of his to use his friend's indoor tennis court over the winter during which time Tilden developed a driving, topspin backhand to complement his defensive underspin backhand, that Tilden turned around his rivalry with Johnston. Once Tilden had that topspin backhand in his reperatoire, he never lost to Johnston again. One time after Johnston had lost yet again to Tilden in the finals of the U.S. National Championship, Johnston in the locker room said to the President of the USTA, "I just can't beat the s.o.b"!

150 miles/h first serve ? Where the machines to record the speed reliable ? That seems highly improbable to me though maybe the rackets where heavier and allowed to hit harder idk. But the serve technique was so much less optimized than today. 150 is crazy by today's standards.
