This spider might be even more dangerous than the funnel web: https://youtu.be/s7wHsj6BXN8?si=0ngPd98TqOrZS471

I won't try this at home. Partly because I don't live in Australia, and partly because I'm not insane

As a kid in the seventies I lived in the outer suburbs of Newcastle 2 hours north of Sydney. We had an inground pool and I would check the bottom of the pool every morning. I would find two or three Funnel Webs every week. They looked dead until you scooped them out and placed them on the deck. After several minutes they would slowly come to life. I would place them in a jar and take them to a nearby ambulance station and they would then send them on to Sydney Wildlife Park where they were milked for their venom to produce antivenom. Caught hundreds over the years I was there.

In December 1971 I was on holiday in Huskinson on the NSW south coast. And we were in a rental caravan in the caravan park. While I was cleaning out the annex I thought I trod on a fish hook. But when I looked down I saw this very large black spider hanging from my big toe. I called my father who was inside the caravan, and told him to bring something to put a spider in. The bite was very painful and after looking at the spider we decided to take it and me to the local ambulance station. Well, this was Sunday and there was a football match on and he couldn’t leave unless another ambulance came. So dad drove me to Nowra hospital which was about 40 minutes away. The bite was very painful and the big vain in my leg was turning red as the poison started towards my heart. Once in the hospital all they did was keep a close eye on me for over an hour. They said that if the poison had reached my groin, that’s when they would give me the antivenin. But luckily it stopped mid thy. The pain was like a red hot poker up the leg. I was lucky, a lady in Sydney died from a bite. One I believe was in a towel and it bit her on her chest. I was a 21 year old soldier and very fit, plus it bit my big toe which is a long way from my heart.
Sorry for the long story.

The craziest thing to me is that he’s roaming around the outback in shorts and ankle socks. Absolutely mad.

Hi. I am a gardener in Melbourne. I once accidently dug up a Funnel Web ( Victorian species ) while planting. It was a very large female, and I had destroyed her nest. I used my shovel to move her away from where I was working, putting her and the soil in some shrubland nearby. But what I have never forgotten is how amazingly beautiful she was, and how I had also now doomed her to death, as she would not survive outside of her den. She did not harm me, and was only being a predator to the immediate insects, and I had destroyed her. Whenever I watch a video about funnel webs, I think about that, and I feel sorry.

When I was in high school (about an hour north of Sydney) I found a dead funnel web and wanted to scare some girls ran around with it in my hand. After having some fun I decided to go and show it to my biology teacher hoping he could preserve it with all the other specimens we had in the science lab. When I got there I held out my hand and he froze, he said “Bernie, that’s not dead it’s just been caught out in the sun”

As an Australian, let me clue you guys in on two things: 1. These guys live close to humans sometimes, that’s why you check your shoes before putting them on and be careful when handling anything they can hide in. Exercise caution and you’ll be fine 2. These guys are not made to climb and are very dumb, so put items they can hide in up and if you see one you can really just walk away and be fine. In fact, the Reptile Park has encouraged people to catch these guys because they are very easy to catch. Put a container down in front of them and they’ll usually walk right in, then tip it up and put the box on a bench and you’re safe to walk away and do other stuff, they can’t climb out of it cause they’re too heavy and built for the ground. Also, when they raise into a defensive position, they can’t do anything except lunge forward, so you can dance your hand above and behind them and be completely fine. The Reptile Park is a must visit for anyone visiting Australia, it’s so informative and has helped even me become less wary of spiders

Lived in Sydney all my life. in 1963 I was helping my dad in the garden and I was bitten by one that I accidentally walked on. 60 years later I can remember the pain on my ankle. By the time I got to hospital I could not feel below my waist. I was put in a coma and woke up 4 days later. No antivenom back then. I was in hospital for two weeks. The reported number of deaths is vastly under reported as stats have only been collected since about 1960. I admire your courage. And now they have discovered the Big Boy Funnel Web. Its 50% bigger than the one you have there.

There was a funnel web downstairs in my house so my Mum caught it and wanted to take it to the vet so they could use it for anti venom. She made me carry that monster for a 15 minute drive in the car and the entire friggin time it was smacking the lid of the container with its giant fangs. I found out way later that they're able to pierce a toenail, and the container she made me carry was a plastic chinese food container. I'm convinced she hated me since I've always been severely scared of spiders.

It's not just the footage, it's the editing and narration too. Getting major 2000s Animal Planet vibes. Did you have antivenom on standby?
