  &quot;Chinese&quot;, &quot;American&quot;, 即是名词，又是形容词。前面有a 或 an, 是视其为a noun, 否则是在以an adjective 使用。决定使用那一个， 与contexts，也就是，语境有关。因此这个问题不是一边倒的对与错。

  In my opinion, there is nothing wrong in both sentences: I am a Chinese, and I am an American. &nbsp;Both words (Chinese and American) used here function as a noun which means Nationality. &nbsp;if we want to be more precise, these 2 words can function as an adjective which means race: I am a Chinese (race) American (nationality); I am an American (race) Chinese (nationality)..

  Wiktionary usage note: As with all nouns formed from -ese, the countable singular form (&quot;I am a Chinese&quot;) is uncommon and often taken as incorrect, although it is rather frequent in East Asia as a translation for the demonyms written 中国人 in Chinese characters or Japanese kanji.

  ‘Chinese’ is not a good example as it creates more confusion, in the word form, which may twist the real meaning of what you are trying to express. ‘I am Chinese’ and ‘I am a Chinese’, in my opinion, are both correct. The first describes ethnicity, and is an adjective, while the second is a noun, and describes my nationality. If the intention is to use it as an adjective, then it’s wrong and incomplete to say ‘I am a Chinese’ as the object after the adjective (Chinese) is missing, like ‘a Chinese boy or what?&apos;. Granted that not all Chinese (ethnic group) are PRC Chinese (nationality), the correct way to describe someone as the descendant of Chinese is therefore ‘He is Chinese’ (not nationality). Just like how I would say ‘I am Chinese, and I’m a Singaporean’. Words like Singaporean, American, Malaysian etc are easy because they do not describe ethnicity but NATIONALITY, so there is no confusion. So you can use these words as an adjective (eg Malaysian flag) or a noun (a Malaysian). <br><br>Dont know right or wrong, aiya, just any how whack lah! See, I’m Singaporean!

  当年肯尼迪在西柏林访问在柏林墙边发表演讲，讲到对柏林人的支持时用了一句德语“Ich bin ein Berliner&quot;, I am a Berliner, 我是一名柏林人，因为加了个 ein 英文的 a ，而柏林有一种香肠的牌子叫 Berliner， 所以这句话听起来像“我是一只柏林牌“香肠””。
