In this exclusive, previously unreleased interview, Alsop looks back on the Cliburn winner who changed the game – Yunchan Lim 임윤찬. This conversation was filmed at Bravo! Vail festival in the summer of 2023, just over a year after Yunchan’s historic win. At the festival, Alsop and Lim reunited to perform Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto, a year after their now iconic performance. A year later, she joined Ben Laude for a conversation about what makes his playing so extraordinary and how his artistry – and his Rach 3 – developed in the year after the cliburn. With the official recording of that performance now newly released, and with the Cliburn culminating in just a few hours, this moment feels more relevant than ever. A conductor’s perspective. A year of distance. And an artist who’s only just getting started. 임윤찬 #yunchanlim #cliburn #thecliburn #cliburncompetition #bravovail #rachmaninoff #classicalcomposer #piano #competition #classicalmusic #musicdocumentary #tonebase #interview #piano #virgilthomson #marinalsop #bach #chopin #vancliburn #pianocompetition #pianoconcerto #rach3 ⏰CHAPTERS⏰ 0:00 “I begin to believe in reincarnation" 0:24 Looking back at a gamechanger 1:20 “He Becomes a Lion”: First Impressions of Yunchan 1:57 Yunchan's Work Ethic and Practicing 2:58 "I feel like his second mom": Yunchan's sudden rise to fame 3:35 Motherly Instincts 4:01 The emotional impact of Yunchan's Rachmaninoff 3rd 4:37 Who is really in charge?
