sure that oil pump belt will last as long as the engine cuz when it snaps, boom, that was the life of the engine 🤣

The day engine builders starting putting a crank belt into the oil to drive the oil pump is the day i knew for a fact that planned obsolescence has arrived at the final boss level.

The comments here sure are…interesting.
We have a large number of F150s in our fleet, from 2015s to 2024s, and they all have large amounts of both miles driven and engine hours. Here are some of the most common questions I’ve gotten from “gearhead” friends, fellow mechanics in the independent side of things, and so on:

Q) How many engines have you replaced on all of these trucks?
A) a handful - 4, if I recall correctly. Two were for water ingestion (don’t drive thru standing water of unknown depth). The other two were long enough ago that I’d have to pull their files.

Q) Is the wet oil pump belt a common failure point on the 5.0?
A) Common? No - we have engines with over 25,000 hours and 300k miles that have never had an issue, and we’ve never had one break. We have replaced them as a matter of common sense if we’ve had the timing cover & oil pan off (again, about a handful of engines in the last decade).

Q) Does the dual fuel injection actually keep the valves clean?
A) Yes, it does. Most other manufacturers are also using similar setups.

Q) Which years of the 5.0 were the worst?
A) Probably 2018-2020 (and I say that as the owner of a 2019). They had not yet perfected the plasma-weld spray-on bore lining process yet which can cause some of those years’ engines to burn oil. There are easy ways to mitigate it though: I switched to 0w40 synthetic and dose it with CeraTec once every third oil change and my oil consumption dropped to about a quart in 3500 miles.

Q) Does the 5.0’s cylinder deactivation system have issues?
A) I haven’t had to deal with any of them yet - the trucks we have that are equipped with the system haven’t had any issues with it (yet). A few of them are well over 100,000 miles with no problems, though.

Q) How often do you replace timing chains, tensioners, phasers, etc?
A) We have replaced cam phasers many times, mostly for noise concerns before any mechanical issues result. If we’re in for phasers, we’ll usually replace guides and tensioners as a matter of course. Very VERY rarely do we ever replace timing chains - we always measure them for stretch and almost never find them to be even close to their service limits. Ford’s been using the same timing chain geometry since the early 90s, and frankly, it just isn’t very hard on the components.

Q) What service interval do you run?
A) Because these trucks can run for days at idle or spend 5 days straight driving, or both, we term it as “severe severe duty.” We change oil & filter every 3000 miles (or no later than 4000 if away from home for an extended period) just using the recommended weight of full-synthetic oil (usually valvoline or mobile 1) and Motorcraft filters… the filters are cut open & inspected every time, and the oil is sampled for analysis at every oil change so that we can keep a graph/chart of “engine health” for each vehicle. We also sample transmission oil & diff lube.

Q) What’s the most engine hours you’ve seen on one of your trucks?
A) One of our 2017 F150s currently has 26,613 engine hours, which is roughly equivalent to just under 900,000 miles using Ford’s multiplier. The truck actually shows 317,xxx miles on the odometer. Still runs like a champ!

You are not just a technician; you reveal the awful truth and the evidence of premature failure...and we are thankful for it!

This "no water pump" thing is a plot. The people who hate seeing them yeeted across the shop are trying to take over.

The Oil Pump Belt explanation is so appropriate. Cause when it dies, it won't be while parked. The sound will be expensive and loud.

Eric, we all love you. When I was just 16, I bought a 62' Alfa spider missing cams and covers. I found a company" European auto parts". I put 1600cc cams in my 1300cc engine. Fired it up and lost a quart of oil due to blow by. I did a complete rebuild after that. I'm 74 now but it is great to know that I can still find hard to get parts when I need them,
