I have a yard rabbit that escaped the colony. He's been out on his own for over a month and is thriving. I keep hoping he will find his way back into the colony to breed the females. He's the only buck so if the does have kits I'll know he's sneaking in and back out.

I am from Manitoba Canada and have had my New Zealand Rabbit colony for 5 years now in a 3000 sq foot pen. They’re able to burrow and live and breed naturally. They have thrived and seem to be very happy. They produce many kits. I have 9 does and one buck. I feed all farm grown feed including weeds and tree branches, also I use natural deworming methods that work very well.

Thanks for your informative podcast
FYI- Donna influenced me as well.

My ex-father-in-law used to raise New Zealand Whites for meat and share with the family. My favorite way to make it was to marinade it in BBQ sauce, just like doing chicken. I've cooked it that way on the stove and on the grill. Either way, so long as you keep a close eye on it, the meat doesn't dry out.

When selecting a mating pair of rabbits, it is important to video the pair in the mating process. If the rabbits kiss this is a good sign. (insert a bit of my humor) We tried the colony only because a few escaped. One issue we had was the colony was decimated by hawks, and the area needs to have protection.

I like Salatin’s idea of keeping chickens under the rabbits and wood shavings/sawdust. Nothing smells bad. The rabbit poop gets mixed up in the shavings by the chickens scratching it out. Collect your high quality compost off the floor twice a year! No cleaning!

Had rabbits. They were more pets than for meat as I was very young but we used to let them out into the grass on a good day. Fattens them up very fast and they get very happy able to run and forage. Makes them great for the table I'd say
