Which of these approaches feels most natural to you? Which do you need to work on the most? Get the FREE PDF for this lesson inside the Jazz Guitar Vault here: https://www.skool.com/jazzguitarvault/about

I am the stay in position guy and usually just change position when the key changes. I always forget to practice the other 2 approaches. Thx for reminding me!

I’ve been playing jazz guitar for about 7 years, after playing saxophone years ago, including as an undergrad degree. Of all the things I’ve studied on guitar that turned out to be an utter waste of tine was the CAGED system. My point in regard to this lesson is this: if you ever wanted to apply any chord melody to your lines, you need to shift and travel to access shell voicings on the middle strings. In fact, it’s the location of the 3rds and 7ths on the middle strings that will often determine the direction of the shift/travel. Cheers!

Great lesson. With position playing the idea is not to just play in one position forever but once you have the positions you work on connecting them. Like Martino, caged, pentatonic, etc.

For a second I thought I read #2 as “The Sh_t Method” because that’s what I’ve been using for a couple decades.

Years ago a friend used the same
expression "momentum" while
discussing exciting solos.
Diagonal playing is exemplified
not only by Wes and Benson
but notably by Django and even
Segovia. While the former may
have been inspired by his two
finger solos, I feel he preferred
the extra "kick" in his style.
Segovia's playing, a development
of the Tarrega/Llobett school
results in a more emotional
expression than 18th century
position vertical playing, taking
advantage of the different strings
texture. While criticized for this
romantic, expressive approach
in ancient music, Segovia filled
halls with non guitarists eager
to be moved by the music but
after his passing the "objective"
approach of many players seems
to attract mostly guitarists and
an audience of common folks
wanting to be bedazzled, not
moved.

I started guitar with the Caged system, it pushed me to learn chords and barré. This is going to be next phase.
