  I had a mate who visited Tibet. He was high up in the mountains, visiting a monastery, being shown around by a monk. The monk asked him where he was from and my friend replied, “Manchester, England.” The monk just smiled and said, ”Ahh, Cantona.”<br><br>The word legend doesn’t do him justice. Honoured to have seen him so many times for United.

  Much as I envied and hated that 90s Man U side, there is no question, Cantona was the single-most important foreign player to grace English league football. Whether or not he was the &quot;best&quot; (however that&apos;s measured) is open to debate, but I&apos;ve yet to see another player have such a colossal influence on English football, an influence still being felt nearly 30 years on.

  When you strip back all the stats, the xg crap and really go back to what took your breath away as a young boy about football, the movements, the jinks, backheels, 50/50s, through balls, chips, lobs, volleys, big moments, I&apos;m glad my hero was and still is Eric, I got to see him most weeks live and you would just watch in awe of him. We used to muck about down by the cliff, especially in the summer when the players came back for training, offering to wash their cars (we&apos;d go twice a week and sometimes sneak in or other times just wait outside, no big security in 94 like there is today, we all knew everyone in the club anyway, dad&apos;s drinking partners or friends of your mam&apos;s best mate etc). Eric came out of training early once and saw us sat on our buckets and gave us £20 &quot;no work today, go play&quot;. Pallister was also a top bloke who would throw us some money but actually made us clean his car 😂. <br>If we were playing at home and I went with the old man we&apos;d leave him and his pals in the gorse and head and watch the players turn up, if it wasn&apos;t crawling with journos Eric would spend ages signing things for people, he could speak good English he just chose not to so the press didn&apos;t chase him for interviews more than they already did, although he still wouldn&apos;t say much. <br><br>As I said before when the strip away all the nonsense of the game and put yourself back to why you loved the game then Eric to me is as fine a player as any superstar, the enigma, the presence (I think aura is what this generations buzz word for it is). Each club and each young set of fans just like me and my mates and thousands of other united fans other clubs have theirs le tiss for Southampton, Barnes or Fowler (not to mention the other ones the had earlier) for that lot down the east lancs, big nev and big Dunc for their city rivals, di canio at west ham, Regis at west brom perhaps, iwan Roberts at Norwich, what Keegan did for Newcastle. That pure footballing infatuation you felt, we were lucky to have a team of them, many teams in fact but the 93-97 era is my favourite, my dad used to follow Denis law around he was his hero and fittingly the original king of the Stretford end. <br><br>Incredibly lucky to have Eric, and know that he loves it as much as we do, the mutual feeling of passion for the club and the game. <br><br>Long live the king 👑

  I’m Spanish fan and I became a fan of the PL because of him. Influential like no one. He was a true leader on the pitch and made whatever he wanted to do with the ball. Raw talent.

  King Eric had the lot! He was the most influential player at Manchester United, probably ever. He took them over the line and made the United players believe they could win again. He was an absolute baller. No one can match his confidence and character as a footballer.
