POV: you go to a zoo. You are with your family. You wander around looking at different animals. It's fun. You keep going. You notice something. Your heart stops, your blood freezes. You see multiple guys sitting next to a bear INSIDE the cage, drinking beer with him and smoking cigarettes, laughing... like olds friends... like it's the most normal thing in the world

Wojtek is one of three bears in the Polish Army over the years. The first was Baśka Murmańska, a female polar bear adopted in northern Russia and later recruited into the Murmansk Battalion commanded by Colonel Julian Skokowski. This battalion was a splinter unit of General Józef Dowbor-Muśnicki's 1st Polish Corps operating in the Murmansk region during the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War. Next was our famous Kapral Wojtek, the hero of this episode. The last was an older Syrian bear named Michał, a gift from the Shah of Iran to an infantry regiment. Unlike the gentle Wojtek, Michał was a nuisance to his surroundings, destroying warehouses and pantries, which caused significant logistical problems for the soldiers. When the unit reached Palestine, the command decided to transfer the bear to the Tel Aviv Zoo.
PS. Wojtek is an example of how Mother Nature can send her children to support a just cause, e.g. the Poles' fight for independence.

Wojtek was actually the second bear in the Polish Army. During the Polish-Russian War of 1919–1921, there was a female polar bear in the Polish military.
Baśka Murmańska was rescued in northern Russia and then enlisted in the Murmansk Battalion commanded by Colonel Julian Skokowski.
