Ryan Hart once said “if you had a shitty, exhausting day at work you cannot play Street Fighter that night”

A way to tilt less is to think “all of my opponents are my friends.” You still try to beat your friends assess, but you don’t rage at them for beating you. You give props when they legit beat you. Even losing to something dumb or op, it’s on me for not knowing the counter.

15:15 years ago, I was watching a clip of a daigo stream. Anytime he encountered something new, or something he didn't have an answer for in an online set, he would pause his netplay grind and immediately go into the lab to figure out what button beats the button he had trouble against. Even if it took 15-20 minutes of experimenting. Every time.

Some people call it "Tilt Queueing". In reality, I'm bashing down the walls of Jericho with my bare fists. I build my foundations via my own salt before I start farming other peoples'.

When I started playing SF6 for the first time, I climbed to Plat 1 pretty quickly as Juri and then slowed down so heavily to Plat 4 and got incredibly frustrated at the game and my opponents because I just didn't respect them. In my mind they were all bad and I was better but they were relying on cheap strategies etc etc. Quitting SF for a few months, coming back, and stopping that ego is what helped me climb. Big ego is such a massive barrier in fighting games and just stopping and understanding that your opponent is a human behind a screen actually helps me. It also makes the fact that arcades are basically dead even worse. In online your opponent isn't right there and you can't talk to them and ask them stuff or laugh with them or anything

I'm a pretty relaxed person naturally, and very rarely tilt or get salty, but I have been very self critical. The following habits have really helped me create a positive mental state while playing:

- Minimise comments that diminish your opponent's skill. Instead of saying "I choked" say "That was clutch" or "That pressure was unreal".
- Praise your oppoenent's smart decisions out loud: "That totally caught me off guard", "That was a sick conversion", "You played really patiently there", "That was smart".
- Inject humour, especially regarding your own mistakes. Whenever my brother or I throw a fireball and miss the antiair afterwards, we have a joke is that our ancestors are crying. (This is a good way of stopping yourself from being to self critical in a negative way).
- Use long term language when critiquing or analysing yourself. Instead of saying "I'm bad at antiairs", you can say "After I work on my antiairs, I'll be able to control these situations".
- Acknowledge when you're frustrated, and don't try to suppress it. Give it the respect, space and time it needs. Frustration happens because you care, and that's a good thing!
- Let yourself get excited when you do something cool. Praise yourself for your progress in the same way you would for someone else.

A bonus is that when you do this stuff playing with someone offline or while chatting, they have a great time too.

Alright I'll stop preaching now.

"Meaningful practice" is a worthwhile concept. You could train for 1000 hours and learn very little, or train for 1 hour and learn a lot. Taking stock of your current physical and emotional state, practicing useful drills, targeting problem areas in your gameplan--it's all so important. Just "putting in the reps" will only take you so far. Also, great video as always!

I think what I took out of brian's segment on Respect/Patience could be better worded as "Avoid Autopiloting" - to me that more aligns with what he was trying to say. As someone who hovers around 1900-1950MR, I'd say the main reasons I lose to much lower ranked opponents or have a really bad session, is because I'm just playing completely head empty and autopiloting lol. Maybe that's more of a personal issue but that's what I got out of it.

As a hard-stuck 1800 MR player who is honestly pretty happy just being in this range, i'll be real: if i get matched against someone much higher MR, i will play them like its Evo finals with the singular goal of trying to rob them, specifically because I know most won't take it as seriously as they should, making the odds not nearly as stacked against me as they should be. Past a certain skill-floor, not respecting your opponents is imo the easiest way to completely crater your MR.

I find that replay review makes me enjoy ranked more because it gives me something more concrete to work towards rather than just aimlessly jumping into ranked again.
