More than 142,000 eviction cases had been filed across the five-county Metro Atlanta region as of August 1. Black people make up about 52 percent of renters in the region, but represent nearly 70 percent of eviction cases. Housing Justice League Board Executive Director Allison Johnson and Legal Defense Fund Assistant Policy Counsel David Wheaton join Roland Martin to break down what is driving the crisis, from rising rents and stagnant wages to corporate landlords, limited tenant protections and a severe lack of affordable housing. Wheaton says a minimum-wage worker would have to work 163 hours per week — the equivalent of four full-time minimum-wage jobs — just to afford a two-bedroom apartment in Atlanta. Johnson describes the human cost: families living in cars and extended-stay motels, damaged credit, disrupted education and people being displaced from their communities. She says DeKalb County alone has 10,000 families living in extended stays and that Atlanta’s public school system has 22,000 empty seats, mainly due to displacement.
