Retro fitted UFH in my 1992 build house. Sealed the concrete. Used 20mm Pir glued to concrete floor poly glue. Laid crates ontop and glued them to the PIR and laid 16mm pipe pressured tested to 8bar (yes 8bar ) and poured a 25mm flexible screed with added glass fibre fibres to it. Let it cured for 3 weeks and took the pressure out of the pipe work and ran at 1.8bar slowing turned heating on at 20c max for a week. No screed crakes developed. The fibres did their job and the 8bar pressure. Then I sealed it and tiled on top with a 10mm bed of flexible tile adhesive again with added glass fibre strands in to the mix and laid Porcelain 900x900 large format tiles on top. Cured for 2 weeks before grouting and slowly turn heating on at 20c. Then off and grouted and a week to cure and back on with the heating at 20c for a week, Now it running at a set floor temperature of 30c for the last two years and its fantastic plus gas bill has come right down and no unsightly radiators. ….
Its not advised to do what I did apparently! but with the system and method I used it works and without raising your floor to high which is only by and extra 10mm in my case.

UFH - best thing since sliced bread!! no radiators on my ground floor since my extension about 3 years ago - we went PolyPipe ( the red egg boxes) in extension and a retro polypipe (sits on top of existing floor) takes getting use to "no radiators" but UFH but well use to it now 3 years on!!

That looks like a great flexible system. Last time I did underfloor heating I used the dense polystyrene boards which was great apart from the adhesive but this looks much better.

Thanks Roger, interesting video as always.

Best thing we ever did to our kitchen was the UFH. I decided to use it as a thermal store as well so we prepped the ground with a good blinding layer and DPM. then stuck 150mm insulation below the slab, then we fixed the pipework direct to the slab using hammer in fixes and cable ties and screeded over the lot. We saved a LOT of money verses buying one of those fancy kits, it was a bit more labour intensive though drilling hundreds of fixing holes in the slab. It takes a couple of days to warm up but also a couple of days to cool, boiler is set at 35 ish flow temp direct to the UFH or fed from the woodburner depending on what's going on. Been going strong since 2009. If only I could do the rest of the house. ATB from J and H Builders.

From a plumber to another: At 10:30 you said you don t need heating there... Yes you DO need heating there, to avoid dampness and mold underneath the furniture. You have nothing to lose if you run a pipe trough there. I run the pipe under everything, furniture, bathtub, stairs, etc...
