  Marlo and Chris were actually friends, in a weird sociopathic way.  You can see this is the scene at the rim shop, where he talks about taking on Avon, him and Chris dap up and are like “we gonna do this right Chris?” In an uncharacteristic playful way.  Also, Marlo wanting to go away to Atlantic City with Chris and only Chris, shows that they were actually on a level friends.

  Not hard to imagine the majority of Marlo's backstory being built during Season 2 when we see very little of the West Side streets outside of Bodie's plot.

  Marlo was there from day one. He was in the shadows reading and plotting on his opponents hints why popped out when the Barksdale organization was starting to decline

  Important part of season 3 is that Barksdale had the towers, and nobody would dare to try and take one or all towers from him. But then the city blows up the towers, and Barksdale guys have no other choice but to move to other areas. One of those areas was a Marlo corner, which is why we see Boadie and Marlo beef from the get go, as Marlo politely asks him to leave. It seems that while the towers belonged to Barksdale, they had no interest in the multiple crews running around on further away streets. But they themselves went into a new ecosystem, and gave Marlo a reason to start beefing, which in turn made him realize that Barksdale is weak. So in a way, the city is at fault for Marlo becoming a bigger thing, and doing all the abandoned house murders.

  It’s worth noting Marlo was only in charge for a handful of months, while the other guys were able to hold it down for years.
