American culture emphasizes individualism - life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. Canadian culture balances that with community - peace, order, good governance. We want our individual freedom and we want to care for each other. It's a much deeper cultural value, that applies domestically and internationally. Domestically, it's why we pay taxes to afford things like public healthcare. Internationally, it's why we fight wars we think are justified (we entered WW2 two years before America and it didn't take an attack of our territory to do it) and why we invented (and contribute towards) peacekeeping.

As a Canadian I find every place I visit in the States everyone was super nice. Living in Toronto for several years, I found most were assholes.

The handle is small because it is a holdover from older bottles. The older bottles had handles like that but larger so you could use it. That handle became recognized as a maple syrup handle. Flash forward to today and we get that little handle because that's just how it should look. Also while the election looked close by American standards, by Canadian standards if the liberals are just a few points ahead they always win because of the density of vote in Alberta. Because so many vote conservative in Alberta it skews the country wide poll.

Those Gamestop lineups are fun and exhausting. I will never forget the Tears of the Kingdom release. Also, Service Canada is one of the best things about Canada. You go in there and people are eager to help you. You can use the computer and the printer free (or you could last time I was there). If you queue up for the information person they ask you if you need anything else before ditching you, and they mean it. On the phone, same thing: I've never felt hurried, and the SC agent has taken my number and phoned me back with what I needed to know and instructions about what I needed to do, and again, they are NEVER the first to hang up because they are waiting to hear if you need more from them. It's amazing.

Hey, welcome to Canada and Toronto! Big wishes for you to thrive here in our beautiful country 💗. I think politeness here is genuinely wanting to help another human being, friendly is wanting to create a relationship and all the commitment that comes with that.

The tiny handle is an example of a skeuomorph. A skeuomorph is a retained but no longer functional stylistic feature. Skeuomorphs are found all over the place. They're the type of thing that was essential when an object was made in its original material, but over the years, they have been retained as merely a design element without any real function.

Welcome to Canada! I hope you love it :)

It's so funny you guys think Canadians are so polite and friendly and you're in Toronto! That's one of our rudest places lol. When I lived there back in the day, I had to train myself not to make eye contact or say hi to strangers.

Your examples do seem pretty typical, for example, over my life I've lost my cell phone 4 times. 3 of those times, people tracked me down to give it back.

No idea about the Itty bitty handle the stuff we get made locally doesn't have one so I think it's a branding thing

Maple syrup handles are so small because they used to be for securing the actual handle. Remember those vintage gallons of cheap wine "Le Gallant" ? They used to have a similar handle. :eyes-pink-heart-shape: Look it up.

In Canada you can only have a weapon for hunting or target practice. Even if someone invade your home you cannot use it to defend yourself or you will go to jail.
One thing to remember is that unlike the US who live to work, we in Canada we work to live. That makes a big difference in your mental state.
