Considering Tangerine Dream were brought in as a last minute replacement with little time to create an entire movie's worth of music makes what they managed to achieve quite impressive. They created something magical and memorable.

My Dad worked on Legend (sound editor) after Blade Runner as he and Ridley got on well. He told me that the recuts really got to Scott more than they did on Blade Runner despite his commercial sensibilities meaning he understood them, but it was a more personal project I think. And for what it’s worth...most of the crew (editor included) seemed to prefer the Directors Cut as that was nearest to the scripted form as shot

The dance scene with Lilly and Tangerine Dream is one of my favorite pieces of music and favorite scenes in movies. To me the score for the European version does it's job very well but the scene with the dance would not have had such an impact on me without Tangerine Dream. Honestly I'm glad to have both versions. They are both lovely in their own way.

I actually grew up with a 3rd version of the film. The USA network TV cut, which I had recorded off of broadcast onto VHS. the cut is very similar to the theatrical american cut, in that it features the tangerine dream soundtrack, and alternate scenes. the big difference however, is that it contains extended scenes from the european cut but doesnt have omissions like the American theatrcial cut. This USA Network TV cut includes scenes such as Gump's riddle, the neon Darkness opening, an opening text crawl that explains the "no darkness without light" setting of the film, and a much longer Meg Mucklebones scene that is even longer than the european cut. The extra and extended scenes contain the original Jerry Goldsmith score, then cut right back to the Tangerine Dream score. I consider this to be a best-of-both worlds cut, kind of like a hybrid cut. When I purchased the directors cut, I was disappointed that it wasnt the version i grew up on, and when i watched the american theatrical cut i was disappointed that so much was omitted. The USA Network TV cut is my DEFINITIVE CUT, and as far as I know, this version doesnt exist in the US as a commercial release. I have been looking for it for decades. Maybe one day i'll find my bootleg vhs buried in my parent's garage.

We had purchased this on VHS tape, remember when VCR’s were the most amazing things?? Our VCR was so advanced, we had a wired remote!
Tom Cruise was in Dallas in 1989 filming Born On The Fourth of July. He was filming in our little residential neighborhood and they allowed us to go observe filming. It was dark and cold outside, late into the night, Tuesday or Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Security had told us that if we were quiet and didn’t obstruct filming, we could meet Tom Cruise at the end of the night. First, he had to go in the trailer to get all the facial hour removed and out of costume. He came out into our small crowd, maybe 10 people, and I told him how much I loved Legend. He looked genuinely surprised, and I asked him if he didn’t like it? He said “It’s a beautiful film”.

This movie is tied with Neverending Story as my favorite films of all time. I grew up seeing more of the American cut, but also the European now and then, so I grew up with both. Not until I bought the DVD 2 pack of both did I finally get to watch the entirety of them without commercials. So let me suggest one thing:

Everyone should watch both versions of the film. Piece them together in your head however the story suits you best. Each version has something fantastic to offer.

This movie was also one of the major factors growing up as an artist and writer, specifically one that focused heavily on high fantasy and romance typically involving women and monstrous men of various forms and mindsets; hero, villain, or anti-hero. Sometimes they're more monstrously minded, and sometimes all physically. lol

I love the tangerine dream score. I find it to be very ethereal, dark and magical.
