Around 1960, a teenage math student at Harvard wrote an essay about his philosophy of life. Then he was led into a brilliantly lit room, wired up to a heart monitor, and filmed while a young lawyer tore into him.
His code name was Lawful. Decades later, he was arrested as the Unabomber.
This is the experiment run by the Harvard psychologist Henry Murray, a former OSS officer who had helped design interrogation tests for American spies. For years people have said the room made a killer, maybe as part of the CIA's MKUltra program. Here is what the records actually show, what Kaczynski himself said about it, and what nobody can check, because his file was sealed for good.
