The Massey Ferguson Dealer Sent His Technician to the Wrong Farm—What Happened Next Saved the Season

I am an old farmer that has often had dealer mechanics that were here to work on something. They had no problem at all with repairing other machinery that wasn't the brand that they work for while they were here. I haven't owned new equipment under warranty that needed any work, so that may be an issue, but I've never personally had a tech tell me he couldn't work on another brand. He wouldn't have the diagnostic computer program to work on other brands that only dealers own.

Very interesting. The US mid west farmers are full of common sense, and very similar to farmers I knew in Australia. It seems the writers are familiar with the way farmers think, and how they make strategic decisions.

I learnt the economics of the hog cycle as a lad, when we had to decide whether to plant pumpkins in a particular year. I then had formal training in the hog or cobweb cycle, when I studied Agricultural Economics at uni. Farmer’s lads and lasses often found they were familiar with lots of subjects when they studied at Ag College and University.

Trouble shooting machinery problems was the norm, and everybody was a bush mechanic. I started at 9 years of age, giving our rotary mower a valve grind and decoke. It was an old side valve machine, and dad supervised/taught me, a real fun time for us both. USA volume measurements differed to our British system, which had 8 pints to a gallon. Real traps for young players there.

The common comment “AI slop” seems to be applied indiscriminately, and many worthwhile videos are unfairly and inaccurately condemned. I now ignore these trolls, and make up my own mind.

I seen a video of a farmer who has been farming with the same old equipment for 40+ years while his neighbors and friends were buy the latest new equipment and every time they turned around they were either calling the dealer about what was wrong with it or trouble shooting them and losing days of work that needs to be done in a certain time and yet he has had no problems with his old equipment and has completed his plowing and seeding on time every year and isn't a half a million dollars in debt.
I would stick with what I know is dependable rather than what is New.

In the UK we have Right to Repair. An owner can take equipment to whomever he chooses.

As a former combine technician at a John Deere dealer, that thumbnail makes my skin crawl. I could list so many things wrong with that picture.

Like the competition know exactly where to look without any first had experience but the main agent has no idea arms says it's probably a sensor fault when all along is a common problem ! No I don't think so.

This is why the 'Right to Repair' bill must be passed. The John Deere dealerships won't let anybody have access to the computers on the equipment to diagnose and they frequently fail to respond to breakdowns in a timely manner. I'm sure the other proprietary manufacturers do the same. Maybe not as bad as the VERY arrogant John Deere company.
