In the end, it's Andy's capacity to keep a straight face during these monologues that will be listed in his obituary as his real talent.

Was happy that my collection went 0/10. It came close with Springsteen. As for the Americana hate, I know a couple of women named Karen. Both incredible people, way better than myself. I feel for them in the way their name has been hijacked. I grew up in a house of Country Music lovers. One of my parents joys was watching Chet Atkins play Beatles's songs on his guitar. The thought of which artist came from which country never entered their mind.

David Lee Roth famously joked: "The reason the critics all like Elvis Costello better than me is because they all look like Elvis Costello."

Your understanding of the rightful place of Lenny Breau and the album he did with levon and Rick is one example of a bunch that make me realize I am not alone in the universe

On Kylie and Dylan's genius for melody, I've come to the conclusion my brain could obsess on any melody that's repeated on the radio/tv/etc. I once bought an album of Gavin Bryars orchestrating a tramp singing Jesus' Blood never failed me yet and couldn't stop singing it for years.

I enjoyed your comments about Astral Weeks at the end. It's one of my favourite albums and I think the lyrics are indeed a significant part of it, in fact the lyrics and the music seem to be issuing together out of the same wellspring (rather than writing music for existing lyrics or the reverse). It is poetic; it's a reaching for what life really is (or is meant to be), as traced within the youthful memories of VM.

More broadly, your take on postmodernism is one I agree with. It's an idea that has infected every sphere of life and has led to many variations of degradation in the human condition. "Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one", right? And if no opinion is better than any other then what is truth? What is quality? What is anything? Unfortunately, what portends to be a liberation of individual freedom has had exactly the opposite effect, because (I would argue) humans have never been so easily manipulated as they are today.

Ultimately, I don't think you can progress with your line of argument unless you can first define what the purpose of human life is. If it has no purpose at all, then postmodernism is fine because one opinion is genuinely just as good as another. But if it has one - even if you are only feeling your way towards it - then there is a touchstone or measure by which things - beauty, music, art, character - can be assessed. I think Astral Weeks is VM stumbling in that direction; I find beauty in it because I consider that to be innately human.

Well, there you go. You have philosophised for 80 minutes (or however long your stream was) and I have done so for 20 minutes or so in writing this response. Seems fair. 😉

I can understand a certain underwhelmment in hearing the last waltz, but only from the standpoint of expecting a little more out of a band as great as The Band. Music from Big Pink is on par with Pet Sounds and sgt pepper as one of the most influential albums in Rock history. It caused Eric Clapton and George Harrison to totally reevaluate what they were doing musically at the time. Roger Waters said it was the album that was his biggest influence as a songwriter. I'm not the biggest Beach Boys fan out there but at least I can acknowledge that Brian Wilson was an absolute musical genius. Americana music is essentially an entire genre based on recapturing what the band did on that one album. That should demand a certain appreciation.

What I like about Andy is that he is not afraid of being wrong.

I resisted these titles: The Band, Ziggy Stardust, Blond on Blond, Horses, Born To Run [now your very credibility is on the line], Pet Sounds [now you need psychoanalysis to understand what unconscious life force is making you put this one up], Astral Weeks [nope].

These are classic albums. You got that right. You don't like them. Okay. You have a thing about America, so does everybody else. But you gotta admit there are some good things come out of that 'experiment.'

Americana was created in the 1920s ? Yes I agree with you about that. I dont think the Patti Smith thing was a reaction to skill. It was directly out of the greater NYC scene, a strong female voice with provocative lyrics. Lenny Kaye created the Nuggets compilation which was more influential. Well basically it comes down to tempo and dance able rock and roll. I was around this and saw many of those cbgb type bands and they were all retro rock and roll and so was I, we were all fairly obsessed with 60s garage rock, maybe because of VU in part. Real rock and roll had dried up and pop slowed down.

I watch videos like this to be entertained and Andy usually achieves that. Becoming irritated or angry about his opinions on music is completely pointless. He's no different to any other serious music fan in that he's clear about what he likes and why and is critical of music which doesn't meet the requirements of his personal taste. Ultimately, his opinions on music are no more valid than mine or any other viewers'. Music either moves you or it doesn't and all the philosophising and intellectualising in the world won't change that.
