Mechanical engineer here. A lot of comments about the calipers. No this is neither the technically correct tool nor a very precise way of measuring precision machined parts, (you can expect +\- .005” on caliper measurements typically) but the scraping he is doing with the tool is most likely of little to no consequence depending on the material of the caliper edge. Many calipers have a hardened or even a carbide tip. You need to consider the relative hardness of the material. Mild steel is far softer than tool steel or carbide, and will cause little damage to the calipers.

You did very well on this project with the tools you had at hand. Don’t let people tell you that you should not do a thing purely because it is imperfect. If that were the case nothing would get done.

Kind of how all this move to accuracy evolved.....Re-inventing the wheel but you had fun in the process....

You did well to finish a project. That's always a good thing but I work as a machinist. There are improvements that can be made from the ground up on this machine. The metal tubes that are the foundation for the linear rails, need to be flat. Like with-in .005 of an inch of each other. The rails themselves, the spacing between them needs to be accurate, down to, again less than .005 of an inch. Calipers are not the most accurate way to do this. The tool post is not adjustable as far as height. It can go up but not down. The spindle must be lined up with the linear rails or else your work piece will be tapered. The 2 pieces of metal supporting the spindle are transferring so much vibration to the chuck that cutting on metal looks like you used a rock instead of a carbide insert. You need to use something to dampen the vibration. I've seen people use sand, concrete, or epoxy granite (concrete mixed with fiberglass resin). That will make the machine heavier, yes but also way more rigid. Rigidity is the key in any machine. Like I said you did good to finish the project, and made good welds! Still a lot of improvements to be made though!

wenn ich als Lehrling so mit dem Messschieber umgegangen wäre hätte mich der Lehrmeister rausgeschmissen, zumal der Anriss so vollkommen ungenau wird.

    Good job

👍 Good work. Only the scratching with the caliper hurts a little 😂
But for home use, the machine is good enough. Don't care about the negative comments here. 95% of these people who are leaving negative comments aren't able to to what you have done. What are the costs of all parts?
Greetings from Germany

Job well done. I am also looking at building myself a small lathe as its becoming a tool I need regularly these days.

There aren’t any standard tubing that will fit a 32 mm pillow block. They are always a little bigger than the bearing diameter . I must add if you are lucky to find one good but you may have to lathe down the tube. This is what I experienced
