Fair callout from the comments: if you have carpal tunnel or joint issues, a $20-35 vortex mixer is absolutely worth it. My point was specifically the $100+ lab-grade ones being overkill. Your hands come first!

Side note: The vortex paint mixer works better than a metal ball and shaking for those of us old folk with bad joints and/or carpal tunnel syndrome. HOWEVER, the trend I fell for that has worked absolute wonders for me is the "bubble popper" fidget toy as a well palette. It has saved me HOURS in cleaning the palette, and who knows how much in well palettes overall. FAR more than worth it.

Oil washes are incredibly common in the scale model world, used for highlighting panel lines, overall weathering effects, such as soot and exhaust stains, they are almost always used over a clear coat seal, and as I have found it really is more about what you clean off than what you put on

The $35 vortex mixer off Amazon has been going strong for three years for me now. It’s 100% worth it, everything else she said here is spot on.

I love my Golden paints. So Flat black is my go to black. Brush licking and airbrushing without a mask should be a general no go.

new paints might not make you a better painter instantly, but if they help you to enjoy the process more and you end up painting more because of it then they're well worth it and ultimately, as you say, painting more will make you a better painter.

Actually really like the golden paints. They're my daily driver and I use them on my wet pallet to get them to the perfect consistency. Another option is to use monument glaze and wash medium if you want them a little bit looser.

I actually love my golden so flats. I don't air brush which is defs a big factor. But any golden so flats that I have are usually the best colour I have for that hue, and they glaze better than any other paint I own.

At 51 I'm late to this hobby thanks to my wife buying me HeroQuest and a batch of Army Painter Speed Paints for Christmas. I've been busy painting the furniture items for the game and can't believe the results, I'm the real world example of anyone can get into this hobby.
