Basically, if you want to install rulers while removing strategic assets from the board, destroy strategic weapons through espionage, or implement regime change, get a hobbit.

In Middle Earth, everything and everyone seems to be in slow but steady decline. The elves fade away and move into the West, man get shorter life spans and appear to become “lesser men”, Ents become ever more tree-like, even Shelob and Sauron are but less powerful, smaller versions of their forbears Ungolioth and Morgoth…

A dragon with intelligence and speech was one of Tolkien's novelties. The one in Beowulf spotted that a thief had nicked something from its hoard, but was mute. Wagner's Fafnir was a shapechanged giant (who also had a critical weakness, I wonder where Tolkien got that idea from?)

His other weakness was his sloth. He did not care to push things when he had the chance. He waited far too long on his hoard. Even he admits this.

I believe I have mentioned here in the Comments of this Channel before, my Head Canon that the bare spot in Smaug's armor was there because he tried to use the Archenstone as the center piece (both to protect specifically his heart and as a thumb-bite to the Dwarves), but the Stone decided, <b>"Nope!"</b> and fell out.
